I like to run there and film it .. If I can catch the hog without a catch dog it's nice cause the dogs will roll out and get on another one while we fool with whatever I'm or whoever is sitting on. Most the time there's more then one bay goin on anyway so I think it's nice to be quick so those group of dogs can get on more too
All this only works if I start off by running in the right direction to begin with tho haha
As far as range .. wouldn't it mater more if the dog takes a track and puts a hog at the end of it ? What's it prove if someone opens the box and all the dogs run away .. Might look cool on a Garmin I guess
seems like when they get somethin in their nose is when the range starts .. They'll be 200 feet away just huntin for a good while , then once they pick up a trail they're a mile away before you know it .. Or they might be far out what seems like a cast but they're leaving you and checking where traditionally they've struck hogs before . I think they remember that stuff if you take them to a place enough .
All that being said I don't even own a hog dog that's just what I think is goin on whenever I get invited out

I got some that if they get 2 or 3 miles away I don't worry to much. Then I got some you best not stay to far back or could bad. Not to start nothing but I would never go eat dinner while I had a dog bayed lol

This thread like lots of others on here through the years deals with the different cultures within the sport. I fully support folks being able to use whatever style of dog they want and hunt them however they choose. The culture I am from says that a dog you can stay real close to don't cast very far and won't run much track. More of a wind only or really hot track dog. He probably won't run one very far without quitting and coming back to resume the hunt. That is how you can consistently be real close to him when he finds a hog. This sort of dog can be real productive where there are lots of hogs, probably catch more hogs with him than a cold nosed dog with lots of bottom. Also the culture I am from is against a dog that "fights" a hog since we want a colder nosed dog that won't quit a track therefore will often get to a hog a long ways off and if you "aren't" real close to them one of 3 things will happen, dogs get cut up, hog gets wrecked out and ruined, (we catch and tie) or the hog flushes and the race is on. I am not saying I don't want a dog to bite a hog I do want a dog to bite a hog to stop it but when it stops I want him to back up and bark, hogs are smart and figure out pretty quick if I run this rascal bites me but if I face him I can keep him off of me. 1-3 dogs that don't "pick" at a bayed hog will keep lots of bad running hogs bayed that otherwise would not stand bayed. Hogs have 3 choices when dogged, whip them off, out run them, or be eaten alive so for the hog to stand bayed he needs to be able to feel he can win if he stays still. This sort of dog you don't have to be in a hurry to get to and seldom gets cut up very bad. Now you can drink a beer take a dip of snuff and listen to'em bay hahaha. The fewer dogs you turn loose the better off you are for this style of hunting. I don't have any experience with the find, catch, hold, type of dog therefore have no comment on them.

Slim your under age you shouldn't be drinking. You can dip snuff but I wouldn't recommend it. It's a nasty habit

it all goes down the same. I ain't talking getting trashed and going hunting, that's dumb. The law says 21 but there's 40 year old who can't drink without getting stupid.... And Copenhagen has my heart, save the lungs screw the gums Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Was about 8 yrs on the wagon. In that time I broke 5 bones and had 5 kids....I drink now. Not like I use to but I do. 8 years gave me time to grow up and think clearly. Now when I drink I keep my ass at home...and I haven't broken a bone! fixitlouie@gmail.com

I don't drink much but I do sip on a cold beer or 12 about once a month. I'm not one to just have a beer with dinner. When I drink, I drink a bunch of them. Lol. And like fixit said.....I keep my tail at home. We like to grill and make a fire with family and friends, tell lies , Pick guitars and pretend we know how to sing old country songs. My wife can get real mean sometimes though ! And according to her its always my fault.

I'm the only one that likes it when I drink. I turn mean In July it will be 11 years sober for me. My opinion is you owe it to your dog's to be 100% clear minded you never know what will happen on a hunt.

Yeah my buddy got his start dogging with a guy who used to get trashed while hunting. I mean I've heard stories of him falling off horses and crap. At the very least I'll tell you I don't think much of the guy cause of that
