Sometimes the pig wins.

We walked a lot of country last night, was beginning to believe the helicopters killed all the hogs. Heard a report of 330 shot over about 30 square mile area. Dogs finally took a track and got in a sprint race and they got smoked. Decided to load up on wheeler and make our way back to the house. Charlie bailed off and I cut the 11 month old pup in after him. They went out about a half mile and started coming back toward us and end up split bayed. I went to the pup with bulldogs. He was bayed in a locust patch wrapped in blackberry wrapped in saw briars. Maybe the worst spot I've ever seen. There were about 50 cows and calves surrounding the patch so I had to get bulldogs very close. Sent them in and heard them hook up. I was 20' from them and literally could not get to them. He managed to shake 2 catch dogs, one of which is very experienced, and cut them up a little on his way out. Bulldogs tried to chase the hog which broke through a set of cows. Luckily they kept their heads and didn't mess with them. Managed to catch them up a few seconds after Charlie ran his set of hogs right through us. I was extremely frustrated and called the dogs to me and walked them out. I was disappointed and a little angry at the time but this morning I'm calmed down and proud of them. I hunted an inexperienced bulldog and a puppy cur dog with 2 experienced dogs. They trailed, bayed and, for a moment, caught the hog. They may have got beat but they will be better prepared for the next one. You cant win them all.
