One of my best dogs has been having problems with soreness in his shoulders I believe. He can only hunt for a couple hrs and then he's holding a leg up for a week. He has sustained a great deal of cuts and front end damage over the years and I am aware that this is probably the cause I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to help slow this process of getting old?Has anyone used cortizone shots or b-12?I feed 24/20 will a higher protein diet like a 30/20 help?

Rimadyl will help... I used to give it to my old gyp after she blew her ankle out. I would give her one the day before, the day of and the day after a hunt.

Have you tried a good daily vitamin for older active dogs? Seems to help my older dogs re cooperate faster and they seem to have overall more energy.

Get a bottle of DMSO  it's something that racehorse people use alot & can be bought at feed stores & Co ops.  It takes the soreness out of everything!  Used it often when we fieldtrialed fox dogs and they wouldn't get stove up in 3 days of running.

Dexamethasone is good stuff for inflammation, along with the banamine as mentioned already, only kicker is you have to have a script to get it.

My paw paw used to wrap an ace bandage around their joints and soak it in DMSO, and they would be ready to roll the next day.

Magna poultice is a good way to treat sprains, athrities, stressed joints, ligaments, and tendens.     Got a dog that has swelling in his joint or pastern after he hunts, look into magna poultice
