Been looking around on here for a few days and have a few questions, I'm just getting into using dogs for hog hunting and was wondering what is some of the better cut gear on the market right now, been hearing about hard core, southern cross, uglydog....any to stay away from.
-) i've got some pups about ready to go to the woods but have been told by a few around here not to really worry about cut gear on them right now but im not sure I agree with it
-) do you all run vest on your bay dogs during the summer/any time or just cut collars

Might want to see how they hunt and bay before you gear em up unless you know the stock they come from. Getting warm for best be carefull and learn where your hunting a new dog with a best can drown pretty fast if they panic you can patch them up u can't un drown em. As for vest lot of good ones on the market most made of the same stuff just little different I like pnp for a cd or rough rough dog. But a very light best is best for your average rough dog if it ain't really rough you don't need no vest

I run a p&p vest on my bulldog. Larry paris out of kenefic ok makes it, been pretty good gear in my opinion lota others like it to.

I would recommend hardcorehogdogs.com super light tough and dependable we use ours year around

if their just pups i wouldnt worry about cut gear right now, id hunt them awhile and see what they do or if their even going to make the cut. its fixen to be hot and odds are you would prob have one of them die of heat than getting gutted, just my 02, i dont run any cut gear on my mutts its to hot and i dont want one to get tangled up and drown from a vest.

Can't tell you how many times I go hunting, leave one dog with out a cut collar, and that dog ends up being the only one not getting cut!

My dogs hunt naked... just wear a couple of tracking collar necklaces haha. I do run a light vest on the bulldogs... the Devestator from WildBoarUSA/Ugly Dog is the vest I've used for years.

^ same here on both counts. Currs wear tracking and id collar and bulldog wear wildboarusa cut vest.

I run cut collars on bay dogs. That is a personal preference but I can see no reason not to run a cut collar. Knowing how they bay in a controlled situation could help greatly with this question. As far as gear I choose Southern Style. I feel it is the best gear on the market. If I didn't I would run another gear. Research the material and construction and choose the best gear you can afford.

SHOTGUN, theres really only one im worried about because he is pretty gritty on the hog at the house but the pig is about the same size as him so im not sure what he'll do on a bigger pig as I don't have access to one, he wants to catch it on the jaw and hold it more than bay it(he might be more useful as a catch dog)
Anyone on here from over Mississippi way.

Mike, what are your reasons for not running cut collars? I don't want anything hindering my dogs performance while they're hunting... their mobility, getting hung up in brush or fences, getting weighed down with water, getting hot, etc... |

x2... another thing that can happen...a young dog that has caught and over powered smaller hogs in a bay pen can become over confident...and the first time he meets up with a toothie boar out in the woods might be his last...or can be cut pretty bad before he realizes his mistake...I have made that error before... |

We run Southern Style cut collars on our bay dogs just in case the get to close. Vest bulldogs every time.

Liefalwepon...on that 1/2 mt cur 1/2 pit I would use a vest depending on how gritty that is...I take a chance on no collars because of collar with name plate and tracking collars...
I have seen quite a few excellent 1/2 mt cur 1/2 pit that hunted hard and had short carriers...

Yes, mine will set back and bay one... I don't care to run any rough dogs. |
