I'm no stranger to dogs with broken legs. A big boat broke my CD's leg 2 years ago, in 6 pieces (vet said). With an external fixator and 10 weeks on rest, he was walking and a month after that he was back to catching. About 2 months ago I ran to the back because one of my pups (3mo old at the time) was screaming. She must have gotten her leg tangled in the pen panel and snapped her back leg. I "chicken winged" it with gauze and at different times she would get the gauze off and walk on it. After the 3 week battle of her not wanting it lifted, I admitted defeat and didn't wrap it anymore. She is 5mo old now and good as new. Last weekend a buddy of mine had a dog get clipped by a car (pic below). They pinned and wired it, then sent him home. Here's the kicker! 8 weeks of close confinement, then 8 weeks of a little more room but no action. 16 weeks for what I would consider a "simple break" on a young dog. He is considering taking him to a different vet for follow up not only because 16 weeks seems crazy but also because it is a little far of a drive. I'd say the vet is trying to cover there butt, just wanting to make sure that everything is set good and completely healed. Necessary probably not but now days with the way the world is they probably just playing it safe

Your dog looks to be below the knee. His looks to be a femur.
I have one that broke his femur in a lateral fracture by a hog. Put in pens and wired it up. He spent 5months in my kitchen in a 4x4 pen. Once healed he spent 2 months in the yard. Then he went back to work.
The femur is a more dense done and takes longer to heal complete. I am very happy with the end results.

i will agree with shotgun, i had one tangle me up in his chain during at feeding time and then pulled me on top of him, breaking his femur. the vet said the same, 8wks confinement, 8wks minimal movement, 8wks and light exercise and then slowly work him back into full exercise. mine had to be pinned and wired too, and even after 6 months, he still wasn't 80%, didn't want to put weight on it much, but when he would run, its like he was using the leg like a spring board, and launching himself off that particular leg. i could see a very noticeable difference in his speed and movement once he learned to spring off the leg.

The one below the knee was my pit. Below the hip was my buddy's dog in question. He was talking to an assistant when he was told 16 weeks. At the latest check up, dr said 8 weeks off, then exercises till you think he can go back. They cleared it up. I was just thinking 16 weeks is a stretch, but we wouldn't run him unless we know he is ready. Thanks for the input fellas

Might not hurt to start him on a calcium supplement and a multivitamin for dogs, a lot of minerals and vitamins at key roles in nutrient absorption and utilization.

The irony of this post is I commented on 5/15. Well yesterday at feeding time one of my young dogs bout 11 months old broke his dang leg. He will need pins. Broke his below the knee. Smh.
