Need advice on getting dog started catching.  I currently have a nine month old AB gyp.  She is a big nice looking gyp whos sire was supposed to be out of catchdogs.  She was given to me by my brother who lived in the middle of a big town with not enough yard space.  She is very puppyfied. I am working on getting her started as a CD but currently she is showing no interest.  I always used pits and most of them just had it in them.  I am looking for any tricks anyone might use to get her fired up.

I put her back on the chain and that was my plan, just give her time.  The only thing is I need one to go right now.

I wouldn't use her now anyways... she's too young. Wait till she's a year old and let her adult teeth set or you'll have a toothless catch dog.

But, in the meantime, send her in behind one that's caught... in a controlled situation where the hog can't throw her around and damage her teeth. Then start in the woods at a year old, behind a proven catch dog until she has a bunch of hogs under her belt... and you feel comfortable with her abilities.

I would give her more time.  Keep giving her chances and if she isn't showing any interest at all by the time she turns 1 you may have to make a decision.

The catchdog I have now was that way.  He didn't pay attention to a hog at all.  I couldn't even get him to sniff one much less bite it.  I kept him in front of hogs on a regular basis and then one day he joined in with a bay dog, barked a few times, and then grabbed it.  He has been hell on wheels ever since and is absolutely hog crazy now.

Took Savoy to the swamp and he promtly got his v-card punched.

He's out.  And you're out.  And i don't think I'm in either.

what mike said x2.. right now, work on her handle. Don't care for the bulldogs that once you get to leading in they try to drag you to the bay.
When her adult teeth get set,  start working her like mike described. I had one that like cull buck said wouldn't pay the hog any attention. We had a bay dog running the sow around and all the AB wanted to do was smell the hog. Well, finallly the sow decided she'd pay the bulldog some attention and bumped him around twice. He caught the second time she came at him and he's been mad at hogs since. One of our better catch dogs. Good Luck and take care of those teeth.

I AGREE MOSTLY WITH EV1 WE MADE A AB THAT WAS A LIL OVER A YEAR OLD CATCH BY MAKIN HIM GET CLOSE TO THE HOG AND WHEN THE HOG GAVE HIM A LIL FIGHT, HE NO LONGER WOULD TRY TO RUN FROM HIM, BUT INSTEAD GO STRAIGHT IN AND CATCH, ALL HE NEEDED TO KNOW WAS THAT IF HE DIDNT CATCH THAT HOG WAS GONNA WHOOP HIS @SS. ID DEF PUT HER IN BEHIND ANOTHER CD, SHES AT THE AGE TO LEARN, JUST PUT HER ON A SMALLER ONE AT FIRST, AND ONCE SHE IS A YEAR OR SO, GO A LIL HARDER ON HER! BUT IM NO EXPERT JUST WHAT I WOULD DO!

Thanks for all the advice, the ones I had in the past would normally catch or they wouldn't.  Most were all grown dogs though.  Only problem she is only catch I have at the moment.  I lost my good catch dog a few months back.  I have a friend with quite a few so I'll work her with his dogs.
