Scent conditions, time of year, age of the track,  and terrain have noticeable effects on my dogs track and find speed.
-
I primarily hunt @ daylight with silent cur dogs. Hogs are normally bedded therefore our dogs typically have to trail a little bit before they find them. I guesstimate our typical track is 2 or 3 hours old. Once the track is acquired, it typically takes less than 15 minutes to trail & find the hogs. Track length varies from a 100 yards to a mile. I've seen it take longer to work a 200 yard track in a ticket than it did to run a 3/4 mile track from a grain field across an open pasture to bedded hogs.
-
High grass and a heavy morning dew in July and my dogs have a hard time moving it at all! I have to go find heavy wallows or hunt water!
-
Judge- I used to hunt a little black catahoula gyp that was a straight wind dog. I can't tell you how many times I watched her cover a 1000 yards or more and get bayed in a minute or less while my ground track dog was just gettin his nose lifted out of a track! She was not as reliable a find dog as my ground tracking dog however when the conditions were right, she looked like a magnet was pulling her to the hogs. I had some nice hunts with those 2 dogs!

(Sorry man that came across last night totally opposite how it was meant to. I was not thinking right last night.--- I was about to fall asleep when I wrote it.) But that being said we were in some pretty open woods and could really stretch out. During the first 3 hours they really run faster than that...according to GPS. They slowed down down around 4-5 hours. I didn't pick em up till 5 Saturday night. The man who was with us- He picked up his dog the next morning running a hog.

Speed seems to be a relative thing & a lot of variables go into it. The amount of time a dog is hunting or trailing before the jump all affects the average speed. Also a dog that has been running for hours will naturally slow down after a while.
One of my Plott gyps who I consider to be slower then the others is more times then not in the lead. Most of this I am judging in my 25 acre pen which it is very thick in most places with a little open woods in others. My faster dogs average 9-10 mph & she consistently runs about 8.5 mph. Well every time I see the hog cross, she is leading the race. This leads me to believe that while the garmin shows faster times on some of the dogs, they must be overrunning the track at some point or making a loss where my Dancer female stays glued to it with very few losses.

Hey Cajun thanks for your insight. So I would say your Dancer female has more track speed where your other dogs are just faster runners, is that how you interpret it as well.

Rednose, I just think she makes fewer losses.
