I made the trip to north Texas again to come hunt with some buddies. Brought Annie and ranger, both been steadily progressing and I was very confident they'd go hunting at the very least. Well they didn't do hardly anything, though I can say they stayed honest in the beginning when everything else decided they were cow dogs... after that we got in hogs and my dogs wouldn't honor not one single bay, PISSED ME OFF. then last night met chris at his wooded pen. He was working some pups and I wanted to make my mind up on whether I was going to cull ranger or not(he loops out of bays) well again dogs hung around while chris pups were bayed for about 45 minutes. Finally I took ranger out, put the old bird dizzy(who I gave away a while back and am quite happy to have back in the box) in the pen with Annie and we started walking to the bay, it broke, and finally Annie and dizzy went hunting but still wouldn't honor chris dogs bay... which got me to thinking, it's a pretty common occurrence when I go hunting with other people's dogs. Mine usually do like crap and don't honor anything unless you walk them to bay and they finally see it's a hog. Anybody else have or seen this problem... I really can't think of any logical thing I could try to change what they're doing..

Sounds to me from what your saying is the dogs don't know what a bay is. Not saying they don't bay or find a hog but some dogs take a while to figure out there is a difference.

A dog when young or not that experienced may not truly understand why other dogs are barking even tho the dog has bayed and has found a hog. Dogs living in the time they are at so some take longer to understand why others are barking. And dogs don't always do what you want them to do. I never force one to try to do something it should be there decision. Some dogs just don't honer other dogs but 99 % of the time they don't know. Some dogs will go to a bark then if it's bs never go back to barking unless it's there running buddy

Annie is 3, dizzy is pushing 8-9, both should well know a bay. Both are broke honest dogs for the most part. Annie when bored on a dry hunt has booger barked at a deer. Not really even try to run it. And dizzy likes a skunk sometimes. But no livestock and if there's hogs anywhere around they won't be trashing. I can only think of one time ever though that my dogs for sure hunted normally and honored bays with other dogs and that was with chris and we were hunting my places down south like they're used to

Some times some dogs just don't hunt with other dogs if u hunt them with only the dogs on your yard then when they get around other dog's not from there "pack" they don't hunt with them it can some times be like people you go to a party and only know a few people your not going to go around to every one your just going to stay with your group that's what I have experienced any way that's why guys say if u want a dog to stick with another one kennel them together

It gets embarrassing because i get on the phone with these buddies and tell them my dogs are doing good. I'm catching hogs all that... then I put them on the ground in front of them and they look at me like "where the dogs that you catch hogs with at?" Hell if my cell phone didn't have a camera it'd be real easy to call me a liar when I say I catch hogs.

I have witnessed quite a few pretty solid dogs that would not honor a strange dogs bay. If they don't hunt with strange dogs often, it can take them out of their comfort zone. Some dogs do not handle long trips and being in the box for long periods of time. I am sure that the strange dogs trashing ( and the subsequent correction) right off the bat didn't help anything. I've seen some top shelf dogs that would go load up in the truck if other dogs were screwing up. - I would be more concerned with how they perform under normal circumstances. Most dogs need to be exposed to travel and strange dogs a few times before they will perform. -

Some dogs just ain't team players. But if the dogs are barking and not trashing the dog needs to get with em. I have had people say my dog will do this and that then hunt with them and the dog did do anything like they said. This don't mean the dog don't do it it just didn't at that time. Now run that dog few times and it should do what it was doing. One thing to look at is what the dog does every time keep a log on each dog and hunt after a while the dogs true patterns will show them selfs. Then you won't need to log it any more.

I agree with this as well...one more thing to consider...some dogs get very greedy at a bay...especially if the hog has been caught for a while and is more or less dominated by the dogs before you can get there...one or more dogs will stake claim on the hog and will whip any dog that gets near...there is only a couple of things I can not tolerate in a dog and this is one of them...

Reuben I get what your saying. But I don't think that's whats happening... I had a dog used to whip another dogs ass if a dog tried to come bay a hog he found with him. Either he was gonna get it done 100% by himself or it wasn't getting done

at the age of the 2 dogs they should go to a bay .... sounds like some kind of correction has effected them .......what kind of trash breaking has been done on the dogs ? cows? deer? or barking at home or in box ? even boxed with a mean dog will have an effect ........ if they are females may be from hunting with an aggressive male .......

Mr Parker. Both dogs are pretty dang broke, stock proof and usually don't bother nothing else wild but a hog. They get bored the 3 year old will bump a deer and the 9 year old has always been keen on skunks. Neither of those dogs have ever had a e collar of any kind on them(to my knowledge). The plott who is about 1.5 has not trashed for me yet. He Ain't even offered at it. I damn near think it would almost take seeing what I'm talking about to understand. I'm pretty reasonable and understand a dog is gonna be a dog just as much as anybody. But I can't put any rhyme or reason as to why the same dogs I'm catching hogs with at home are embarrassing me on friends places.

Also, none of my dogs fight or are aggressive. I can put all 10 in a single bay box and they will all cuddle up and catch a nap. My dogs know an ass whooping and they know they will get one if they pop off anything stupid

Slim I don't know what you have done or have not done with any of these dogs. I have not seen what you are trying to describe either. I do know that you have said yourself more then once that you catch hogs with these dogs. If you're catching hogs with them then quit caring what anyone else may think about your dogs and only judge them by what you think about them. There is not a single person on this forum who hasn't had a good dog at some point or another not perform the way they normally do. Judge the dogs on what you know they normally do and not on a couple different hunts where things were not normal. There are plenty of people in this sport that think they know everything there is to know about a dog and think your dogs should do the same things their dogs do. It don't work that way bud! Anyone who says they have never had a dog make them look dumb is either lying or just hadn't been doing this very long. Good luck!
