Considering buying a relatively inexpensive night vision scope but know little about them. I found this Firefield NVRS Gen 1 for a bit over $300. Reviews were somewhat mixed but the one guy who spent some time using it was happy with it. Does anyone have any input on these. I don't plan on using it a bunch but the yotes have been getting bold on the new place at night and firing up the bulldogs pretty good since they know the dogs are confined. 300 yds. would be the very max I could shoot.

With a gen 1, you might be able to stretch 300, maybe more on a bright moon/star lit night. Added external  illumination will help, but if u can get a gen 2, or even better, 3, it will yield you better clarity and distance but you will pay a lot more than $300 for a gen 3. Swing over the cabelas in twalatin (sp) and look through their nvg scopes, especially at night and looking at distances.

I've had good luck with Atn, had a gen 2 fixed 4 power but recently got an Atn xsight digital day/night vision. It's pretty awesome, especially for the price. It comes with IR light to mount to the scope, can video, take pictures, has a 1shot sight in (really 2 shots to make sure you're on), can link to your phone, all sorts of different features. Best thing I think is you can mount it on your favorite rifle and use it day and night. They're not crazy expensive, $600/$800 depending on the magnification. That may be a bit high if you don't plan on using it much except for the yotes acting up.  Also you can get an external battery pack for it which is convenient.  I don't know if you would be happy with a gen 1 scope, my gen 2 fixed 4 was good to about 200 with the illuminator, I always wanted a zoom. This digital scope has great clarity even with full zoom.  Hope this helps, good luck in your decision!!

Thanks Charles, I may have to do that even tho I live farther away than I used to. I'd like to get Gen 2 but hard to justify when I am tryin to build a house. We moved up to Toledo Wa. 1/2 mile north of the Toledo Airport now. It is coyote central.

Thanks CutNShoot, I did look at that one but I'm such a Neanderthal with this new tech stuff it kinda intimidates me. The dang Garmin is about more than I can handle. My gun dealer here would help me tho.

I know your not looking to spend much, but I wouldn't waste money on $300 night vision. 75-100 yds is about all it will be good for, and that's with a full moon. You will be disappointed. I have a few sets of night vision. 3 are PVS 14's and one PVS 7, all third generation. Two of the 14s are brand new, never used. They have pinnacle tubes, manual gain, autogated, and are top quality. The brightness and clarity is insane. I don't shoot with mine but you can mount it behind a regular scope and remove it if/when needed. If you ever looked through a set you'd want one and wouldn't think about buying the $300 set.

Then 3rd gen is out of the question, which will run you bout $2500-4000 depending what style you get. As grunt said, the 7s can be mounted in front of a regular scope and be r&r when needed. But when grunt says 75-100 yds, i guess that depends on the scope. I used a gen 1 russian scope bought of cheaper than dirt back in 08 when i was in iraq and needed a fast target acquisition for my 240 and i could objects out to bout 500 yds but clarity SUCKED!!!, 200 yds, clarity was 3/4 a$$ descent, enough to get a good shot placement.
You might look into getting an a/c search/landing light and throw an ir filter on it and it will light up the area as if it was day light, but your looking under nods (night optic devices).
I know money is tight for yaw, im feeling it myself, iv been off work for 3wks so far and wont go back, if at all till mid april, but as the saying goes, "buy once, cry once". Im fixn to go ahead and get both my long range rifle barrles threaded and go ahead and get a can for yote, hog and deer hunting. Its a 1 time expensive buy, but it'll make it easier on my ears and more animals down in a single situation.
