Bigo's post got me thinking. I've never been to a cow dog trial. I've spent some time snoopin' around the Cowdognews site and the Cowdogcentral site and  noticed that it seems like every dog is a B.C. with the occasional Kelpie thrown in. I guess I've always thought of these dogs as "tending" dogs. Yet I know a lot of hands swear by their curs, Black Mouths, Cats, etc. I've always thought of these dogs as "droving" dogs.

Does anyone ever offer cow dog trials that are oriented more towards the curs/"drovers"? If so, how are they different from the trials geared towards Collies?

Do they make other distinctions? Head-dogs vs healers, etc?

All of the B/C trials I've been to are open to any breed! I've seen deffernt dog breeds compete at these trials The only curdog trial I know of is held at Smithville Ok.

Well, technically the ISDS will give a Register of Merit to a Poodle too, if it makes grade and wins the ISDS International... but what are the odds of that happening? I guess what I'm asking is if the BMCs, Cats, etc are actually competitive in these trials that appear to be geared towards tending dogs, strong "eye"ed dogs, etc?

What's the location / date(s) / contact info on the cur dog trial in Smithville?

I don't know when it is! It is an annual event I think. If I hear anything about it I'll post it!

I don't know about the other cur breeds, but NALC have their own type of cattle trials at the Sanctioned trials. I don't know the details other than this is done horseback and they have to move cattle across  open pasture and pen them. So you might check into the individual breed associations if you are interested in th curs as stock dogs.
