Before I get of on this rant, let me state that my Vet is a good ol boy. He's run dogs along side of me, turned steers in the pen with me. Showed me things to do with a needle and thread that I have never seen before. But he happened to be out of town, unavailable at the moment. I went to his office, knowing he was not there, and a couple other Dr.'s and assistants would be taking care of me. This wasn't anything major at all. I have a young pup, I carried along with the older dogs this weekend, and he slipped his collar, and hunted with the older dogs all day. He showed back up lame in his front left, limping pretty bad, and I'm out of anti inflammatory medicine. So after the ol lady "makes" me take him to the vet, we get there. First thing I hear is about how skinny he is, you need to feed him more, and so on. I get that my hog doggin vet isn't here, but still, this place is in the middle of no where. Surely they have seen a hunting dog, or at least an active dog before. By the way, the dog I brought in is 6-7 month, cur cross.. weighing in around 45-50lbs....... he's leggy and athletic looking, but damn sure wouldn't call him underfed as they did. Anyways, corrected them on that and let them know that, he doesn't sit on the couch and that's what my dogs look like. They can't find anything wrong with his leg, because he's tough and doesn't whine when they prod on him, and I kindly ask for my anti-inflammatory pills so I can head home. As I pay my bill, and ask when my buddy will be back in office, they let me know that I should change me feeding on this pup. And tell me how to raise a dog. These people don't even speak when my buddy is in office, but now they know how to raise my dogs? I've told him about his "staff". But just wanted to know what y'all have done in similar situations. I lost my number 2 a little bit, but didn't take it to far. Just curious how y'all handle these things

When things happen like that to me I just say yes mam yes sir. And think what I want to my self. I have found you can't prove anything to some one doesn't agree with you no sence in even trying to explain becuz there going to think what they think and you what you think

I went to a vet one time with my joe dog they said he has heart worms and needs to be treated ... I said ok ...they gave me medicine to give him athome til time to do the treatment .......well meantime I got my other good dog poncho cut where his stomach lineing was cut and his guts was bulged out in his skin not outside just a fist sized bulge ...well I brought him to that clinic ...lady said whats wrong I said he's hog cut ...she said well we have a bunch of people ahead of you I said mam that sign right there says everyone waits there turn unless an emergency comes in emergencies go right in ....... she said well I'm sorry sir I said yes you are .. I went down the road to another vet and he took him in I told him he will bite if you touch it ...he said well lets put him down and he did ...before I got home he called to say he died ...man I have sewed up many a dog blowing air he was just so good of a dog I was scared he had a nicked gut ......took joe he treated him he died in a few months so man I just don't know .....I haven't had much luck bringing dogs in ....

A good solid vet is worth his/her weight in gold! Im lucky two in my family graduated from LSU vet school

Dang I'm sorry about y'alls experiences. We try to get everyone taken care of who comes through the door but we triage our emergencies and if they appear stable, work them into the schedule. Unfortunately sometimes there's a long wait for these "stable emergencies." Now I don't know where y'all went but that's what goes on for us. I'm not condoning or disagreeing with what those clinics did either.  I guess I'm just throwing out the other side of things from the clinic view, hoping to not start a chit storm. I realize y'alls dogs are important to you, as mine are to me, and more than likely would have had ruffled feathers (to put it mildly) if I had had similar experiences. Again, I'm sorry for your outcomes..... |

I have a female vet from east Tennessee that knew about hog dogs before she came here and she tells me to walk in if it's bad and tell them I need you to open the side door and I come in it to avoid the waiting room and all the little ole ladies with the lap dogs!! She has really helped me in the past.

Had a 8month old pup get parvo, even after all his shots. I took him to the vet, he told me 50% chance he'll make it if he keeps him a few days, 0% chance he'll live if I take him home.
Pissed me off because he was real arrogant and done said it wasn't gonna be cheap. Long story short we took him home and old lady stayed up all night giving him Pedialyte every hour and he pulled thru after 2 days. After that I don't put much stock in a vet

My vets an old Russian man he's hard as nails and nothing at all makes him even bat an eye.Ive called him at 3am on several occasions and he says I can be at the office in 15 minutes we'll put a Dog back together and if he feels he needs to stay then I don't argue He has done emergency surgery and kept a dog a week and charged me $350 If I call him he walks me through any situation on the phone if I need meds he sells them to me without a office visit because he will talk to me and try to diagnose the problem with common sense to save me money. I have been extremely fortunate to find The Russian and have nothing but good things to say about my vet.

Kurt kainer in Weimar and Dr.Sladic (probably spelled wrong) at halletsville animal hospital are only 2 guys I use. Kurt is a great guy, awesome vet and is real lenient on payment but he's the guy that I call for something minor and his first question is "do you want to bring him in" lol. But he's left me less in the mail box on sundays and never charged me. Also offered to come home from the NFR when we got a bulldog cut to all hell. Good guy, knows us hunters really care for our dogs. Sladic in halletsville with no prior knowing of me showed up on a Sunday for emergency surgery on my dog. Did all he could sadly pancho didn't make it but the man was a hell of a guy through it all. And he was around when I was in a bind and Kurt wasn't.

I had a vet tell me once my dog was under weight, after giving her a good looking over I asked her how long did it take her to run a mile, her reply was she was to fat to run a mile without falling out, I told her then there's your answer as to why you "think" my dog looks under weight, she was an avid basketball fan and I asked her how many fat point guards do you see in the NBA, same vet put a dog down that belonged to a man I know who brought him in because his stomach lining had been cut and an intestine had been nicked, when he went to get his dog she told him it was cruel to "make" dogs hunt and she did the best thing for the dog, needless to say her clinic mysteriously burnt down a few years later and I'm still not convinced ole boy didn't have anything to do with it, I'm fortunate to have a few good vets left in my area, they know the ropes of hog hunting and what comes with the territory and never ask any questions, a new vet opened up a few years ago and I've known her dad all my life, I went in her clinic with a sick pup once and wasn't rude by any means but told her what all I knew about what was going on and what meds I needed and didn't have a small fortune to spend and if it was going to cost me a lot then I'd just take the dog home and hope for the best and do what I could, she said well then let's see what we can do and hooked me up with the meds I needed plus some free samples and definitely treated me right at the desk, she's gaining business with in the hunting dog community because she works with us, her being raised on a dairy farm and around beagles all her life she understands the bonds we have with our dogs and that we are just hard working people who mean well and treats us as such...
