I would venture to say since dog hunting requires the dogs to expend a large anount of energy and just like human athletes or wildlife in nature, proper nutrition and balanced diet allows the humans, dogs or wildlife to be in top shape, mentally, physically and nutritionally to be able do whats asked of or required from them. An example, a fat ass that sits around and shovels junk down their gullet wont be able to even come close to keeping up with a normal person, let along athletes, even the heavier athletes. Dogs and other wildlife that dont get the right balance of nutrition wont hang with those that do get the right balance.

Charles, I do believe the op is trying to figure out why dogffod is such an issue on all of the dog related boards. I don't think he is trying to figure out why a good dog food is important.
Now my answer to the question is because everyone thinks they are feeding the best dog food there is and will put down what other people are feeding because it didn't work for them... Every dog is different as is every dog food. Some dogs respond well to a particular dog food while others do not. That's my opinion on the matter. I have fed different dog foods and have disliked some, absolutely hated others and thought that some were pretty good so it's all in the person that is doing the feeding's perspective. What is junk to me others may like and visa versa

Tmatt, that is your opinion. I gave my opinion on what iv seen as to the debate over feed. Your opinion is yours and mine is mine. You may or may not see the same views as me are tom or dick or harry or even abdul goat raper. Your opinion didnt very much from what i said. all you did was make vague observations in your own thought process. I will agree that feed varies from dog to dog but when the dust settles, the variance in ea dog falls back to the nutritional value that dog is or is not getting. Your view/s are not wrong, but they are not right, same goes for my views. As the old saying goes, opinions are like buttholes, we all have 1.

I guess I didn't understand your response, because the way I took it, you explained the need for a good dog food. You started off like you were going to explain why there seems to be so much controversy but in the end you got off track just a little... It's ok though. The debate is not because the dogs need a good feed, I'm sure we all can agree to that, it is because no one agrees on which feed is better and instead of agreeing to disagree it becaomes a huge debate and people get their feelings hurt.

I think both Charles and Tmatt are correct...controversy over which is the best feed...mine is better than yours therefore I am smarter...
And it all ties to my feed is better than yours because it has better nutritional value and my dogs can hunt for 24 hours nonstop...
That is why I give both about the same importance as far as controversy goes...

a friend of mine that has cow hunted dogs for years keeping 30 or so dogs all the time used to feed the lone star yellow bag 10 % fat maybe 22 % protein and his dog stayed rolling fat .....but he wormed them out and kept the flea's off his yard .... he kept a barrel of creosote dip charged and man I don't see how them dogs could smell anything else it would burn your eyes days later ....but what I'm saying is even with a good feed a worm free and parasite free dog can do well on lesser feed .....

Well I thought if you fed your hog dogs a dog food with pork in it, it would give them the taste of pig and make them hunt pigs better...
