Whats ya'lls opinion on a dog that catches on the nose vs the ear, can you break a puppy that's starting to catch on the nose or just let him figure it out on his own. I've got a puppy that seen a hog for the first time and he started nailing the nose, would rather him catch on the ear...

Hard to correct but he will eventually find out the hard way. But hey if he catches hard and don't let go that's cool. Lot of guys don't like it cuz it messes the hog up. It don't bother me much

I've had a couple that caught mainly on the snout... they stayed cut up in the mouth most of the time. Since yours is still young, break him off and put him on an ear every time... he may get it figured out.

yea I took him off and put him on the ear and let him stay for a minute then took him off and let him go again, he's starting to loose his baby teeth so I don't really want to mess with him till his adult teeth set in good but was just wondering if I might could break him of it, he just kind of slipped up on me when I was moving a hog to a pen when this happen, glad to see he's wanting to catch though

I have had several pups start on the snout but figure out the ear is better so hopefully it will figure it out, id guess most do at least for me. Otherwise dont get attached lol probably wont live too long or live cut up IMO

Like what mike said they get throats and mouths all cut up most time and in my opinion are more likely to get there jaw broke like that

I haven't been able to break one from nose catching or leg catching ...... my son just gave one away that was leg catching ..... like some of these fella's has said the ones I have had that would nose catch always be cut all up in there mouth and a couple locked mouths and got there jaw broke out..... if a nose catcher catches low out on the end he can hold but ruins the hog ...the ones I have had that caught higher across the snout would get rolled off if they didn't have help on a rank hog ..... if a person is running a bunch of dogs or real ruff dogs with there catchdogs and kill the hogs nose catchers probably be fine ... but us hunters that bay and catch and cut boars probably most would prefer ear dogs I know I do ......

While I cannot stand a nose dog, I did have a good one that I got from Orville Roberts. he was a big 85# brindle bulldog that I named Hammer & he was straight nose. Only got busted up once seriously by a big boar but we caught him. He could forever manhandle a big hog & seldom got cut . He was one of the few that I had that died of old age. The biggest reason I dont like a nose dog is they ruin too many hogs by breaking the snout.

we turn most of them back loose that's why I was wondering, we do run some rough curs that catch with the bulldog, I figured it wasn't good on the hogs or dog to be catching the nose but wanted some opinions from some of you guys that's had more experience with it, my older bull dog is straight ear but hes going on 6 so I wanted to get a pup going, guess ill work with him on it and see what happens
