With this weather and the Acorns dropping, the pigs have been coming out of the river bottom and moving around quite a bit. My roommate has been catching a big boar with 3" teeth on the trail camera at his feeder behind the house pretty regularly. Often times the boars portraits coincide with nights that my dogs are going nuts in their kennels.

Unfortunately, even though I live in no mans land, it is in a small ranchette type community and I live on only 10 acres, so I cant just go cut them loose to catch it.

Well, last night was one of those nights. The dogs started going ballistic at about 10:30 and even though my kennels are solid, made of panel with roofs and no gaps, Banjo got out. I found the little man this morning laid up in the bed of my truck with all of his pads blown out, missing a toe nail and a couple of patches of hair but lacking any cuts and I didn't notice anything major.

When I checked on him a little bit ago, the foot he favored most was swollen like a balloon. He got snake bit too and the toe that got hit has already ruptured

I hope that he had fun last night because he will be out for a while now.

Damn dogs  Angry

That's funny.  I think to qualify as a fence builder, you should own a pack of hunting dogs for at least a year.  No matter how stout you think it is, they'll show you the weak spots.

Got to hate it, when they do that. Kinda makes you feel a little unneeded Grin I had a bulldog once, that at night I would walk around the property with a spotlight and a hand full of rocks. I would spotlight a rabbit, throw a rock his direction, and the dog would go off chasing the rock and get turned on to the rabbit. He never caught the rabbit but it was just a pretty fun way to kill some time. After a week or so of doing this the bulldog got to where he didnt need me to throw the rock anymore. As soon as we went to walking, he would shoot off and leave me in the dust, running the woodline looking for rabbits on his own and come back 30min laters with his tounge touching his feet. Angry

Well, what appeared to be a no account snake bite, presenting with nothing more than a little hemotoxic effect localized to the toe for the first twelve hours, turned out to be a big deal. This morning, his whole leg is swollen, bruised, loosing hair and he has a persistent fever.

Its a good thing that I don't have anywhere to be since I'll be spending the next couple of days tending to him. It is going to be a while before he goes hunting again, with or without me.....

Well, Banjo's hunt without me has proved to be his last in this world.

Of a number of snake bites I have witnessed, he is only the second fatality. I have never seen a dog react as acutely or with the array of symptoms that he did. Despite treatment and my constant care, his condition continued to worsen. By early yesterday evening, it had become acute, he fell into an almost catatonic state in the early morning hours and stopped breathing at one minute till 4am this morning.

I guess that he gets to hunt without me in perpetuity now. I bet he has one bayed by sunrise.
