Steroid paralysis???

Has anyone had any dealings with steroid paralysis... If this dog ends up dying from it,, that will be two dogs I have had that did... In the last two yrs, I have had to give prednisone to two dogs as instructed by the vet. One due to a surgery due to a cut by a hog,, and this one due to a snake bite. Now this one is only 6 yrs old and with only 5 days after bitten,, the swelling is gone from the snake bite but it seems like he cant hardly utilize his back legs ,, Now ,, granted he still does but the snake bite didn't have anything to do with his back legs so I don't see why it is effecting him like it is.. Any experience with this would be a big help,,,cause I sure hate to loose this dog at such a early age... The meds he was on,, was cephalexin and Benadryl along with the prednisone,, so that being said,, the only meds the first dog was on last yr was infection meds with the steroids...
And also,,, my wife was reading last night and came across an interesting find,,, steroids while given to a dog,, will weaken their immune system therefore allowing a parasite to effect the dog ,, the dog would carry the parasite in his body from being contracted it from areas getting it from cows and coyotes... and by the body being weaken by the steroids ,, it allows the parasite to take over

I've never heard of that before... I've given prednisone to many dogs over the years. I used to give my old gyp one the day before, the day of and the day after a hunt after she had ankle surgery.
I hope yours gets his legs back under him.

Well,,, after takin him to the vet,, the steroids are not suppose to be the problem,,, we will see how it turns out though... He seems to be a little better than yest morning but I know that it was a roller coaster ride with my other dog last yr also. Bad days and good days.... cant put my finger on it yet ,, I wish they could talk to u ,, cause it would sure help..

Did last years dog become paralized too? Do you know kind of snake it was, or if there are any snakes in your area with neurotoxin venom? It could be that the venom traveled the nervous sys and is affecting the lower/hind extremities.

Charles,,, the dog last yr was not snake bit but for some unknown reason became paralyzed over night,,,now granted he was 15 yrs old and he had lived a full life and a hard one being as he was a ruff dog and had been cut up from can to cant... This male is only 6 ,, so I took him to a vet and he is doing better but to her diagnosis,,, we cant figure out if the snake bite last week was the cause of it or what... Just trying to find out from different folks if they ever had experience with the same symptoms.. he is up on his feet now and looks to be overcoming it,,,, I wont hunt him for another couple of weeks to give it time and then it will tell the tale ... thanks for the info...

Its good the hear he is doing better. For both dogs to have nearly the exact same symptoms and meds, it would seem the common denominator are the meds. But again, he is doing better and that is the main thing.
