I had the chance to live in New Zealand for a while. while there it was the first time i heard about hunting hogs with knifes. so i found a guy to go out with. what a rush. i have done some diffrent kinds of hunting. hunted bears with dogs in new mexico. hunted goats out of a jet boat on rivers in NZ that was a blast. but hunting hogs with dogs is still the best rush. we moved from CA out to AR and now have are first puppy. i noticed a lot of diffrence from what i have read and seen from U.S hog hunting to NZ pig hunting. the guys down there use all kinds of dogs. no real breeds like the guys here have. lots of different mixs you would never think of. the guys there were also in great shape. up and down moutians all day long. left me in the dust. i have friends down there that make Lifes a Boar videos. lots of good hunting footage of the dogs in action down there. they also dont use as many holders as people here do. to me one of the things i like is a dog grabing a hold of a boar. the guys over in Ozzy have more holder type dogs like people here in the states. but one thing for sure were ever you go hog/pig hunters love there dogs and love to watch there dogs work. i am looking forward to hunting the hogs here in the states with dogs.

they had a lot of different type. lots of there dogs they breed grey hounds or whipets into for speed. lab collie crosses. a lot of the guys just go to the local pound and take a couple dogs and try them out. also at the local book stores they had a lot of books on guys hunting hogs with dogs. packed with storys about different boars that were killing lambs or boars that killed a couple different dogs.

from what i hear the ausies use holders because legally they are only spose to have two dogs on a hog at a time, not for sure, just what i have heard. I personally like the holding dogs, and real gritty bay dogs.

im a aussie and we use holders cause "well what i think" its the best way to hunt and alot of people over here hunt with about 4 dogs we can have as many as we want but i just hunt with one dog or sometimes two cause i think one out hunting is the best lol

Pilla, I imagine most here are already familiar with staghounds, and the 100 different cross-breed possibilities for pig-doggin', but would you mind 'splainin' the BULLARAB to the forum, the blokes here would probably find it interesting. You could probably 'splain the ROODOG too while you're at it.

i was born and raised in texas but lived in nz for a while. the main reason they dont use holders is because of the terrain. alot of times you have to walk 2 miles up and down hills to get to a bay. so its a pain to lead a dog that far and if you use running catch dogs you have to expect them to hold hours. alot of dogs over there are collies. mainly because theyre sheep/hog dogs.

ok well i dont no to much about bull arab's but i have seen some . they are a good sized dog intbetween knee and wiast high maybe can get bigger not a skinny dog but not really big built either usually white with a few spots they have a good head on them if trained right and there fast good holders also can have a good nose for finding and they have a great temperment ive never heard of one attacking a person thats all about i know about them . there are heaps of breeds down here for hunting these days bull terrier cross pit bull . grey hound cross bull arab . bullsmastiff bull arab . the only dog i have ever used is staffy cross bullmastiff ive had 3 of them now and they are fast strong and are smart and they are also a house dog but people around here dont use them cause there only about knee height . probably the best dog ive ever seen work was a dog we had called jaws he was a pure breed red cattle dog we got him because he was classed as the most dangerous dog in town and it was gunna get put down so we took it . the problem with red cattle dogs they seem to attack people they dont no but i giess if there trained properly they wont attack people. blue cattle dogs are awesome bailers they wont let you down at bailing . great dane cross bull mastiff is a good dog to use hunting but are very big and sometimes slow. now about the roodog ive never heard of it lol if its supposed to catch kangaroos thats just silly cause as far as im concered if anyone is game enough to put thee dogs on roo's good on em but a kangaroo is not somethin to mess with there more dangerous than a pig and will rip a dog up in minutes. sure my dog has caught roo's before but only small ones he bit off more than he could chew once when he took in a big one and my dog got more ripped up than i ever seen him on a pig both his front legs were just meat and bone i didnt see no fur on them at all but yea roo;s aint to be messed with unless ya got a gun lol does anyone else have an questions? ill try and answer them lol

Lots of roo dogs down there, jim lawton and max mctaggart both run them, they are just a staghound(greyhound x scottish deerhound)cross with a broken coat like a jack russell instead of the really long hair,a couple of these bad boys will bring a roo down fast. You are supposed to have indigenous blood(aboriginal)to run roos but if you live far enough in the hills its kinda like making moonshine ;)a mans got to feed his dogs some red meat every now and then.

Tcolt those are chiller box hunters. The chiller will only take hogs caught on the head. Anything on the body and they wont take them.
