I was given a very nicely bred pup from a Canadian friend this last week so I drove up 4 hrs to get it. I took her to a vet and got a puppy shot and health certificate. I have done this numerous times over the years. I was informed at the border that I needed to have a permit from the cdc to import a dog from a country that has had rabies. The pup was too young for rabies shots and I thought I was going to have to leave her their under quarantine. Mind you, this pup came down from interior BC where the temps have been below zero for 2 weeks and live isolated from anyone. After over an hour at the border I was allowed in but have to quarantine at home till I get the permit online. The paperwork from the cdc says I have to muzzle and leash this 8 week old beast to remove her from the kennel. They said these rules weren't new but they are just now enforcing them. I just want to know if they are enforcing this with all the rescues bringing in dogs from out of country. They say the rabies has to be given at least 30 days ahead of importation. Anyway I love the pup. She is Carver Jeep Rascal Redboy and very smart.

a muzzle does not even prevent disease worth quarantining an animal, thats ... odd. Rabies is on both sides of the border im pretty sure lol

Turn loose 5-6 american dogs with rabies in their building and see how they like that.

WOW, I dont know if it has changed but in Ontario pups under a certain age did not have to have their rabies vacination.. I know on older dogs taking them from or bringing them into Canada, like you said, they had to have their Rabies shot 30 days prior.

Cajun, that is how they treated it in the past. Not so any more, they HAVE to have rabies more than 30 days ago or you need a permit from the CDC. I applied for the permit after I got home and they acknowledged receiving it so I will see what this week brings.
