I know it’s not very far, but for sure hands-down being able to verify it was a half mile for me. From the road to it’s bed.

This one has a lot of assumptions wrapped around it but some times you can be fairly accurate. I have seen my dog open up unsnap him and he sit down close to two miles away. But that don't mean he wind from that far but I would guess  if conditions are right a good wind dog could wind a mile I have seen mine do it often.

We got a good rig one day in the Marsh & turned Jack & Bosco loose. They went 905 yards without saying a word & caught & bayed a big sow in her bed. Of course in the Marsh they can wind better then high ground and we had about 15-20 mph winds that day.

Use to hunt a place a few years ago that rig/wind dogs were pretty fun to hunt there. It was mainly hay field with a few woods sets here in there. Had a creek runnin through it. With the right wind, my old female sissy would bark and id dump her, she'd cover some ground. Furthest I'd say about 800 and she sounded off.

I've had two of my cur dogs bale out the boat and go 1000 yds and hammer down bayed, one of them opens on track and she didn't say a word until bayed, for all I know the hog could've been laying on the bank, I could careless, I was proud of them either way....

It's truly hard to say how far they wind from . Just because they stop it a mile or so away don't mean they winded it that far. That's just where they stopped it. Just my 2 cents. That's all I run is wind dogs

I've saw dogs leave me winding and find them bayed 2 miles away but unless they are open trailing dogs you don't know if they winded the hogs or winded the track and ran it to the hogs, cattle, bear or whatever. A dog doesn't have to put his nose on the ground to trail. A dog that is straight "wind" and 0 trail would always have to go into the wind or be traveling parallel to the game in a cross wind. Although a half mile would not be unrealistic for a dog to directly wind something when conditions are right, these other angles are just food for thought.

I've got a male cur. He's 8 now, but a couple years ago
We were hog hunting on public land. There was not any fresh hog sign. He picked his head up and started winding. He left out like a bullet. I told my buddies to get ready, he was fixing to bay. But I watched the garmin and he kept going and going. Finally lost signal so we rode ahead and picked him back up. He was still going and headed to  a highway.  He crossed the highway and went another pretty good ways and bayed. When I got there he had about 40
Head of momma cows bayed as pretty as you please. I called him out and went back hog hunting. I knew he winded those cattle a long ways.  I used an app called Planimeter and it showed to be well over a mile (6000 ft).  I use this dog on cattle and if there's no hog sign, he'll find a cow if they're any around.

If your talking about HD then he passes it on to his offspring, the male my father in law is using on cows has a dang good nose on him and can evermore  fly on a hot track....

I've got a young dog that is just barely over a year old. Buddies of mine have been trapping a few off a farm close to the house here. They had a boar hog right at about 80lbs in the trap two days ago. Couldn't pass up the oppurtunity to see him work. Trap was set along a thick, brushy, branch that ran right through the middle of a huge fescue pasture. Put a collar on the trap and drove clear across the pasture(797yrds). Parked with a solid 10mph North wind in my face and got out. He was "winding" him from the bed well before I stopped. Sent him and he made a be line for the trap running wide open. Got there FAST and went to baying. I drove back around to 'em and he was trying to catch every time the hog hit the panel. Called him out and told him to load and then drove around the bend. Buddy turned hog loose. He got down in the branch and got gone quick. Waited 20 minutes and then sent him again. Got to the trap and then trailed off. Went 524yrds, barked twice and was caught. Got to 'em, cut and marked the hog, then turned him back loose in good shape. He's making a pretty good hand at stopping both hogs and cattle.
