Just picked up a Al outdoor magazine at the local gun/hunting store, big article on research on sodium nitrate poisonin for hogs. Seems the main issue is designing a hog only bait delivery system. It appears they have an in ground hopper with a heavy magnetized door that requires 30 lbs of lift to open it. Designed for rooting hogs. Of course, the article several times blamed hogdoggers for introducing hogs throughout the state. Get ready, cuz it’s coming.

the authorities need to make certain that they follow label instructions for using it because there will not be many that will follow label instructions

It's always the hog doggers that get blamed. I remember 15 to 20 years back people hauling trailer loads of hogs all over the US and turning them loose on people's ranches... so the deer hunters could have more to hunt haha.

I get shunned when I say the exact same thing, I can remember my paw paw had a guy in Tn that would come down and buy good boars by the trailer load and he didn't own a dog of any kind, he was actually urged to do it by the fish and game dept to promote another form or hunting, if it's the sodium nitrate there's not much we can argue about it as far as toxicity to humans or other animals because we consume it daily in the foods we eat it's just lethal to hogs because they aren't biologically designed to digest lots of sodium, there will be some restrictions on its use but not a lot, just another battle that were up against....

thats right goose and i'll add that 20 years ago tn wild life resources agency turned a bunch of hogd loose all over middle tn on wma's . that was common knowledge then , but now that they've spread out on the farmers they are sweeping it under the rug and blaming the hunters .

lethal to hogs because they aren't biologically designed to digest lots of sodium,

Goose,,,, my question would be ,,, will hogs eat it or continue to eat it while making themselves sick ...I wonder if the hogs are gonna be smart enough to know that it makes em sick before death.  Its not like the hogs in the woods are starving to death and they are in a controlled environment where they have eat this bait where they  tested this before.... as smart as a hog is,, it sure seems like they will determine what to eat and what not to eat..,,, but like you I truly believe that its gonna be implemented.

That's a good question but from what I've been told and read it doesn't take a lot for it to be effective, I can't speak for all other states but can for the state of Louisiana, we have a bunch of educated idiots who run our state lands as a tax payer funded science experiment, they come up with a bunch of hypothetical scenarios to deal with this "problem" we claim to have but yet when a sure fire solution and method for helping with the situation with little to no cost to the tax payers is staring them in the face they can't or won't comprehend that's it's not that difficult, there's ALOT of shady number 2 that goes down within our state concerning OUR wildlife, I've seen this stuff firsthand, basically if you don't have a deep family trust fund to back you and pad the pockets of those within or haven't spent 10 years at a university then your opinion doesn't matter, I could sit here all day an tell of ignorance, they didn't know how to deal with a redneck with some class and education at the task force meetings our state developed, I was vice chair man of that committee but learned along time ago that pissing into the downwind side of a box fan will get you nothing good, and sadly that's the situation were up against in LA....

None of the studies they show on feral hog economic damage show you the worst culprit to our economy as far as economical loss is the white tail deer, we won't hear anything outa that file because deer hunting is BIG money and the way we're stereotyped is that hog hunting is for the low class rednecks, I kid y'all not, hog hunters will get the blame for CWD being found in MS, we'll wind up the culprit once their precious deer herd is decimated and they can't point the finger at themselves....

Missouri the same way. Meetings tell landowners how diseased hogs are but the only animal testing positive for diseases is white tails which the CWD is primarily in the northern part of the state. Hogs are in the southern half. Or else hogs would get the blame. Don't want to see the poison being used. USDA said in meetings if they can eliminate hunting then they could effectively trap every hog in the state. Then later in the meeting would say for the pigs that got trap shy they will go in and shoot over bait piles. 3 contradictions in the meeting. Trap every hog then hunt trap shy hogs but hunting isn't effective but they use bait piles which CWD is blamed on bait piles. I couldn't keep up with the BS.

Back in the 1960s the outdoor life magazine in the advertising section on the back section..you would see advertisements about ranchers selling feral hogs to hunting leases...the ads would say that wild hogs would make the hunting lease more desirable for the folks leasing to hunt deer because they could hunt year round because hogs could be hunted year round...only s few places had hogs back then...

ya'll are all correct . the wildlife people are a bunch of crooked basterds . when i was a kid we had very few deer , then they brought some in here out of tx and up north . okay then we had some to hunt . fast forward 30 years , now we have more deer than you can shake a stick at . ticks and lime disease is rampant , they cost millions in vehicle and crop damage , they carry several diseases that kill cattle . and who pays for all that ? the man thats paying taxes on and trying to make a living off the land !

about the hogs as i've said before twra stocked all the hogs in middle tn . 15 years ago their wasn't that many hogs then they outlawed hunting with dogs . now they are everywhere . they say hunting is not the answer , it only makes them spread .

i tell you the truth , every time i ever caught a hog the only thing that spread was his blood on the ground .

we have bears and panthers now in places they aint been in 200 years ..... don't piss down my back and tell me its raining

Seems to me that if hogs are that much of a problem, they would encourage hog hunters to do their thing as opposed to condemning them

My thoughts exactly, they want to severely restrict the hog hunters and point the finger at us, while scratching their heads and coming up with theories all the while they're breeding like rats in a subway tunnel, but were the idiots...

I don't know whats wrong with people these days,, they aint got no common sense to me..    I visit another hunting forum over here in Louisiana,  and it amazes me how some of these folk want to just fall in bed with these state officials on the way that they manage the wildlife on the state and federal lands.  I been working for the government for 18 yrs and I can tell you first hand that they cant manage nuthin rite..   But they will close wma seasons with hog dogs,,, not squirrel dogs or beagals,,, just hog dogs,,, cause they claim that they were harassing the bears on the wmas.   Now that don't make a lick of sense to me,, especially since there wasn't one single bear killed or harmed on paper by a hog dog during the 28 day season.   Now ,, all these wmas are loaded with hogs ,, and they want to claim that the only way to get rid of em is to poison em ,,   The only bears that I know of that was killed was by deer hunters that thought they were shooting a hog ,,, so in my mind ,, why they aint shut down deer season yet.  This bunch WANTS to poison a eatable animal ,, its the only way they say to effectively manage the population of em they say,,, but yet they will close the door on hunters and shut down all these areas so there is no accessibility for 400 to 600 hogs on each WMA that was being killed in a 28 day period..  This bunch cant add 1 +1,,,, if you stop taking off 600 animals yearly off of property ,,, naturally the population is gonna explode,,,, and they caused it...

I firmly believe its because they want to poor money into these poison programs and stuff somebodys pockets....they can lie all they want ,,,

Yep, follow the $$$$. And wait, once they start these programs, some major eco disaster will happen, like a threatened species will die from eating the dead hogs or something like that. These know it alls are always educated beyond their intelligence and never see the bad that their pie in the sky plans cause,, until AFTER the fact
