I got to take a group of high school missonary students(boys and GIRLS) from Colorado on a hunt this morning. It was a perfect cool morning for a hog hunt in the Hill Country.
We cut loose my normal crew of 2 curs Ginger, Poco and Jagd Twinkle with Amerigos Rhino and Pickel in the mule for catch dogs.
As soon as we unloaded the mule the dogs left out. We drove up a 1\4mile or so after gettting ready and found them bayed in a deep ravine and drove around to find a way in. The rock walls here are thick with dead cedar and steep with loose rocks and boulders. It is very challenging to make your way down especially leading catch dogs that are rearing to go to the bay. I nearly tumbled into a avalanche several times.
Got within what I felt was 30yards but with the echo of barks it could have been 10yards or 80yards it was hard to tell. I released the catch dogs and they went screaming throught the dead blown over cedar and up the side which was more steep than what we had just went down. The smart old hog didnt want anypart of the 2 big white dogs coming at him and ran like the wind through country that is only easliy covered by air. IN SHORT HE BLEW OUR DOORS OFF!
After tracking and driving we didnt get all the dogs back for over and hour.
Watered them and turned out again at a windmill. Poco left going behind us and Ginger left up the valley we were trying to hunt. After 20min of sitting with no dogs Ginger opened in the next valley over with Twinkle quickly joining. It took a few minutes to drive over and when we got to the mouth of the valley we cut catch dogs from the mule. This time Rhino and Pickel went straight up the cliff with ease and had the hog grunting in no time.
It was about 80yards up but must have taken me 3-5min at best to traverse my way up to them. I was grasping for vines, trees and anything to help me pull my way up and escpecilly grasping for MORE AIR with the short climb nearly straight up I was worn out!!
They had a nice young boar about 110-120lbs with nearly 1 1\2in cutters.[/size=4] Another small fry with long teeth. This one was young and didnt cut anyone.
Rhino and Pickel had him stretched so we waited for all the others to catch up and let the students stick him.
We rolled him down the ravine saide where I skinned and quartered him Quickly, TDHA style. They were very happy kids and plan to have pork loin and hams for dinner tonight.
I found Poco (I think he had been bayed\caught too but wind and and terrain makes it impossable to hear if they are very far) loaded dogs with everyon OK and made it home in time to go to work.
HAD A GOOD MORNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang that Frio looks real nice. That hill country terrain looks like it would be real tough on the ankles, runnin around in the rocks and all. Way to go luckyshot! |

That little bend in the Frio river right there, looks mighty inviting for a summertime cannonball!!! Man, I'd be all in that clear water if I hunted around there.

I love hunting there. There is not much running anywhere you go. It is slow going UPnDown. The dogs have to learn to hold a bay because it may take awhile to reach them with the catch dogs. If it gets any hotter I will wind up in that little hole or one just like it, question is What does Longshot swim in when he goes hog hunting and forgets his bathing suit?....... Longshot |
