Yesterday hunt

Gathered up the muttley crew and met some friends for a day hunt yesterday. We kicked out some young dogs first and they set to hunting. We all kinda stood around and chatted, next thing we hear YAW YAW YAW AR AR ARARARAR a ways off. Someone says LISTEN!! So sure enough there’s dogs barking. We all look at our gps and these 3 pups are standing still yapping away so we head to em to where we think it’s closest. Nope. Go another way and we get to about 250 from em. Close enough. I almost turned my black dog Bleu out to go ahead and get it caught but we decided better to walk the catches in to em (ugghh).  Pacman is basically pretty new to catching so we took him, Bleu and a buddy’s catch. Somehow I fell behind and heard hollerin so I figured what the heck...get him Bleu!! Unclipped and waded in. All 3 catches were caught good on a nice boar with those puppies going bananas. Hobbled him and packed out. Got the older dogs out and hunted around some more, they hitailed it out yonder and got bayed, off to the races!!! We get like 100 yards and all you hear is hog RRRAAWWRRRR RRAWWRR HUHUHU HU all kinds of loud. Trees and bushes making racket and I’m thinking holy frijoles this is a big one!! My boyfriend and I figured hey we’ll  send Bleu and seal this deal up. Our buddy says Ya send him....if you wanna get him killed. Now I’m like uhhhhh what. So this was my first sounder that apparently was bayed and they were ready to stand their ground. A dog started squeaking a bit too high, so buddy said well go ahead and send everything you got that bites. Done. Bleu and Pacman looked like gazelles launching out the box. 3 of us scoot on in there and the boys stop because there’s about 7 hogs in there grunting around. Then WHAM!! Bleu catches then buddy’s dog and Pacman. THEY flip the hog and we get in there and hobble a nice barr. Get dogs caught up, assess damages, and haul him out. Tried for one more but our genius selves didn’t bring lights so we caught the long range dogs and called it. Sorry this is so long, but it was super fun and had a blast!!!!!!!

Thanks guys!! Yes we were all super proud of those youngsters, it was the first hunt for 2 of them. Haha, thanks Cajun, it’s kinda hard to make hog sounds with letters, lol!!! I’m feeling a good year ahead!!!!

Yes sir Mike we had a great time.   T-dog this is one of the few times I’ve been around folks who like to let the young ones go first, lots of other people I hunted with before don’t want to turn out pups first, when my dogs were young I had to keep them up until my experienced huntin buddies said ok whether it was my place or not. I didn’t know, I asked that night why we let the pups out first and these buddies explained their reasons and I like their reasoning. Always happy to have other people’s thoughts on training to put my mind on, especially when it helps pups out. I also love pups turning on, it makes a person proud even if they aren’t yours, lol!!!

I agree with there being a time to cast pups or older dogs first. I wouldn't cast a young dog first in a situation where I knew they were going to have to really dig some hogs out when they could barely line out hot sign. I also don't cast them first when I don't feel like they've been enough to understand that they are there to find hogs. To me, even independent dogs, have to get a few hunts under their belt before they get a good idea. BUT.... they are like people in the sense that it might take one hunt for this dog and a dozen for the next. Kinda high jacked your post, sorry. I like how you're thinking.

No problem tdog, I like to hear people’s tips and methods. This group of guys is awesome, I’ve been fortunate to hunt with them and they’re all very kind and don’t mind my questions even if they might seem goofy. I’ve had my dogs for 6 years I believe but it’s basically been the same set, minus one I’ve tried to replace but nothing fills her paw prints how I want. She passed suddenly and right in her prime.  Any thoughts y’all might have on getting a young dog to range out would help also but I might should start a new thread....
