Went out for a hunt last night with some very good longtime friends that just recently got into hog hunting with thermal scopes.
Had a fun time and successful hunt and rid my neighbors of some hogs that been slap wearing out the pastures. Killed two young board bout 120 lbs and then got a really nice stout stump of a boar probably pushing 300 with a bit of age and teeth on him.
It bring the middle of the night and that front has just passed thru with lot of rain and was windy sprinkling and the wind had turned from the north so it was cold and we knew nobody was gonna wanna get out bed around to clean some nasty boars, we didn’t have anyone to give the meat to. So I got the bright idea to take em home and use the meat to save money on dog food.
Well me and my buds shot the sh!t and helped out my son went to skinning and quartering. We got all that going and had everything kinda cross contaminated and weren’t being very clean as it is for the dogs. Plan was to pack it and freeze it in quarters to throw to the dogs as I have done before.
Dogs was raising heck and one of my bulldogs broke a chain. And it was a commotion. So I chunked em each a quarter to knaw on. The big hog when we cleaned it, we noticed it’s nuts were very small. Like one almost non-existent and the other was very purple and little and almost rotten looking. Didn’t think much of it at time. Thought maybe just old hog if anything. He was stout as could be and healthy otherwise. I was tired as well so maybe not the best decision.
This morning it dawned on me that maybe hog had brucellosis. And here it’s is I done fed every dog on the yard this meat and don’t know which got which hog and everything was cross contaminated from blood anyway...
From what I have read today it takes 4wks for symptoms to show up. I know if it’s brucellosis I prob just ended my breeding program with the dogs out of it here on my yard...
It’s just freakin me out a little as I have more than 10years tied up in this thing I got going.
What would be you guys next course of action?

I've had a couple male dogs get swine brucellosis and I caught it early. Started them on doxycycline and cured it with no problems breeding them. Also it is not contagious dog to dog.

Ok, thanks for the reply bigo, so only canine brucellosis is contagious dog to dog. Just worried because I don’t breed a lot, just for myself. The program is anorexic in that regard. therefore there just isn’t a lot of dogs that I have placed out to go forward with besides what I got here on the yard

Man I hope it’s a false alarm for you! I don’t know if it also works for brucellosis, but I freeze everything for 72 hours before feeding it to the dogs, I’ve always been told that kills everything in the meat

Do you have proof? A number of top dog yards require a tear before allowing use of a stud. I am asking I do not claim to be a expert maybe swine is different than K9? |

X2 on what Bigo said... I’ve had dogs get it several times over the years. It may take 2 or 3 30 day treatments with doxycycline, but if you knock it, they can still be bred. If it comes back after 3 rounds, you’ll have to get the dog neutered. I lost one dog to it years ago because I was giving the wrong antibiotic... the swollen nut went down, when it really ruptured and the infection went into his body and went septic. That was a hard lesson learned. Now I keep a bottle of doxy on hand and start a dog on it immediately if there’s any signs of brucellosis, lyme, lepto, etc...
