This water is killing some of our good hunts. We planned a hunt on a pretty nice place we only hunt once a year. It’s some prime river bottom with some hills and pine plantation surrounding it. Of course the recent rains have the river bottom swollen and a mess. Anyways decided to go ahead a make a run since it’s already warming up pretty good.

I only carried my two 8 month old pups. Mathew, Riley, Marshall Mims and Willey all brought there dogs. We cast out started in on hogs. It wasn’t long and we were all split. I stayed with Mathew most of the day. Too much went on to give a detailed hunt. It was pretty steady hogs until about 1 we started gathering dogs with the rain coming. All the dogs did pretty good.

My pups started a couple hogs and made every race. I guess not long after we started we were going to one of Mathews older dogs that had carried a shoat off that initial cast. We pulled up and sent our pups to them and caught the shoat. We got back to the buggy and was gonna try to get back up in some high ground. My gyp pup drifted off and started opening, the male wasn’t far behind. They got over about 250 yards and really started singing. Matt’s old dog went to them then, they ran about another 500 yards and bayed solid. We dumped the box and they were all singing to a 200# boar hog. My male dog met us at about 40 yards from the bay, I knew he had been popped. Got his first good cut up under the chin and probably got his feeling hurt. He followed me back in and was baying. Matt’s old dog rolled off from there and opened a few times back up on a hillside. All the pups went in there and after about 5 min they finally had a bay going. Solid 150# boar they all caught after a short race. We get back to the buggy and are gathering up dogs when my pups open up again and start running. Everything packs to them and now we got a race. They run about half an hour then bay, it breaks makes a couple more big loops and then the dogs finally go down into the swollen river bottom and bay. We had split bays about 80 yards apart for about an hour. I finally convinced Matt to swim across since he had more dogs over there lol. After all that we decided to get up on some higher ground. Dumped everything on a big track and not long they had him up and running. Caught a pretty rank boar hog to end the day.

We ended up with around 15 total. It’s hard to keep count with all that water and that many dogs. Good hunt all the way around. Everyone’s dogs did good.

Great hunt. Man I might have to breed to one of those dogs to put more bark and color in those Plotts.

I can certainly point you in the right direction to some good male dogs if ever needed. All workings stock dogs. I’ve always been a gyp man, Briar was my only male dog I owned that I would breed to.

That water sucked and we were worried about gators pretty good. Made for an interesting hunt. Matt’s a hand. Always fun hunting with him.
