Well I wound up getting in touch with Justin 7 weeks ago, he had one week old puppies on the ground and gave me the opportunity to get two of them when I asked him about them. Me and my buddy Zach decided to make a road trip out of it. South Carolina to east Texas is about a 14 hour drive, took about 15 with traffic. I rented a 2019 Ford Transit and I’ll tell you it was wayyyy better than driving my lifted Chevy down there. $280 for almost a week and not putting the wear and tear on my truck and tires was a steal. I threw one of my army cots in the back and me and zach rotated driving every few hours and it really wasn’t bad like that.
Got to Justin’s at midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning. We were going to go make a round Sunday morning but slept in a little instead. We went midday with the two parents of the pups, his dogs Willie and Sissie. Sissie just came off pups and was out of shape still, but she was working hard trying. Willie ran one for a while but we ended up catching him up because it was getting hot.
We head back to the house and get the dogs fed, then ride over to a farm and Justin got 43lbs of crawfish for us. He head back to the house and Justin cooked them up awesome. I think I must’ve ate 5lbs for lunch around 5pm. We decide to make another round at 7. Justin loaded up Willie, Flip, and his Lil Momma pup. We start reading them and didn’t see much sign to start with, but the dogs stayed busy and were steady hunting trying to find us something. We end up getting on a little group of shoats and catch a nice little meat pig right as we were on the way out to leave. Caught it right off the side of the road laid up, couldn’t have been any easier to get the pig out unless the dogs bayed it in the road lol.
I’ll tell you what, just based off the dry runs we had I can say Justin has some really nice dogs. They consistently stayed busy hunting, cutting loops, checking the wind, and looking for tracks. His Willie dog is crippled up now and was still giving it everything he has. I’m super thankful to have a chance at owning a male and female off of his blood. And you couldn’t find a better guy. He let us stay at his house for two days, fed us some awesome crawfish, and took us for two rounds to let us see the dogs work and to get us on a pig. We had a great time and will definitely be back down in the future to make it happen again. Even got some meat in the cooler.
We are suffering in some traffic now with the highway closed down, so I figured I’d go ahead and type this up. Still got a good ride ahead of us. Gonna be 16-18 hours this time due to the traffic. Well worth it for a good time and to meet new friends. It was cool to see a different style of hunting and to see how different dogs do in a different type of terrain.
