Cut aquiles

Had a dog get his aquilies tendon cut in half a couple months ago.  Have always heard that once that happens they are done with that leg. Well i tried it anyways and sewed the number 2 out of it with fishing mono. Like 30 or so loops around both ends and put him up in a kennel. I would say he has about 95 percent use of it right now maybe 98 as i havnt pushed him. I dont plan on running him again till the fall corn but what are the chances of it holding?  Feeling of it i almost cant tell the good one from the bad one seems to have healed almost all the way. Just wondering his chances later on.

I would think it would fine if it’s already 98%. The longer you leave him put up, the better the results will be.

I had a big catahoula dog a few years ago that did the same thing. Vet sewed it up like you did and he made a full recovery with no issues till he died. Good luck.

Kbar thanks. Have had several people tell me no good doing what i did tendons wont heal back together but damn if it dont seem like he is nearly all the way back to normal. I am going to give him at least a couple more months. Time will tell but i will say if it ever happens to anyone else i suggest atleast trying it and put him in a kennel they cant move much. I was told to splint it and it might work well the splinting didnt work for anything he chewed it off so he got antibiotics and dex and time will tell

The dog is doing really well. I plan in giving him the summer off. I wish these young Vets would just try something, it didn't look hard to sew but he had the advantage of having him put to sleep....good luck

My best dog cut hers 4weeks ago and I took her to 2 vets and both said I would have been wasting my money. She is basically ruined now. But she is 12 and only has one lung so her career was about up anyways.

Tendons can and do heal back together, I’d have to question the integrity or knowledge of any practicing physician of man or beast who says other wise, I know there’s extreme circumstances and cases, I was 15 I cut my left index finger 90% through including the tendon that controls your finger to move up and down, could only lift my index finger half way, cleaned it really good and wrapped it good and electrical taped a stick from tip of my index finger down to my wrist so I could hold my shot gun and finish our squirrel hunting that weekend, got home and went to dr. and only option was surgery, I’m 32 now and have never had a single issue after the healing process, if he’s using it good now I’d give him a physical therapy regiment and start slow and over the summer increase the load on it, if he starts showing ANY lameness or soreness in that leg lay him up until it goes away, recovery cannot be rushed and each case is different, you know your dog better than anyone else and know what he can and can’t take, professional athletes have tendon repairs everyday some don’t make it back and some never miss a beat, just don’t rush recovery....

The young vets will spay a dog in a minute. It didn't look complicated to sew the Achilles, probably way easier than spaying a dog. The vet that helped me is 65 years old and charged 100$. I paid him 200 and thanked him. I would try contacting your state vet college or find an old vet and ask him to give the dog a chance. There's nothing to loose.

Finding a good vet is like finding a leprechaun... these new ones live for that dollar bill... and aint got no common sense.  Good luck to you and your dog man,,,  I had one good vet in the last 20 yrs and after he passed I have come to realization that I probably wont find another one like him...

I did it myself. Minus just absolutely horrible i do all my own vet work. Not expensive to get the right stuff and most of it is over the counter supplys anyways. Thanks a lot for the responses. Dont remember the date but pretty sure it was in January sometime. Only been 3 months or so and thinking something like 4 months start exercising then at about 6 to 8 try him again.

Alright boys. Seems it’s one or 2 of y’all saying you’ve got a dog you’ve brought back from this, or have things looking up after a dog had this happened. I’m going through it right now. Sewed it back together. Casted for a few weeks.. then what? How did y’all go about working them back in to using the leg? I’m not really sure what to do, just put her back in her pen and let her do it on her own?
 
  Walk me through what y’all did that seemed to work, trying to give the last dog I got left a shot at coming back from this.

Any tendon issues require time. I would not let her out of the pen for a few months and then start back gradually.
