Made a hunt yesterday and got a strike. Turned Steel loose to get it started. When he got it going, turned Hillbilly to him and they trailed sways and jumped. Hog was making some loupe in the sawgrass and canes and we moved to get closer to them. Pulled the boat up within 30 yards of the race and Hillbilly came to us. He had air leaking between his ribs and some stomach lining hanging out of his flank. I turned Hank into the race and they bayed him in about 10 minutes. Went in and caught about a 200# boar. Steel had a bad gash in his shoulder and a couple other minor gashes and Hank has a bad gash to his hind leg that hit a bleeder. Got the bleeding stopped and got them to the boat and went to work on Hillbilly. Sewed up the ribs and put a drain in him and sewed up his stomach and stapled the outside Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hope they heal up fast, glad y'all got him shut down and caught. Nothing worse than getting wrecked and with no hog to bring home.

I’m glad you got him and the dogs are gonna be ok. I sure like the looks of ole hillbilly and steel. I remember hillbilly sneaking waaay out and breeding my female over in Georgia lol. Sounds like this boar could’ve been a jealous husband.

T dog, That is Steel and Hank. Hillbilly was not up to doing a photo opp. Thanks guys. That sawgrass in the background is where we caught him. That is some thick stuff. Most of these hogs do not get as big as hogs on dryer ground but good lord, they all have good tusks on them. I dont know how Hillbilly was able to run with those cuts in him until he came to the boat.

That thick sawgrass is perfect for an ambush on the part of a bad hog too. The dogs are in his lap before they know it.

Well hopefully this rough start will lead to a good ending as the season wears on, but that was a good hog and the right kind to cause damage in thick conditions. Hope they beat the infections and are ready to go soon.

Good Hog Cajun that saw grass and cane is nasty.Hope the dogs heal up fast sounds like they done a good job at shutting him down if a hog gets way out in that stuff it can make for a long day.

Took Hillbilly in to the Vet this morning. Yesterday I noticed he had a pretty good bulge in his flank where I had sewed him up and I was afraid he had herniated. Turned out it was just a hematoma and needed to be drained. My Vet did compliment me on my suturing and staple skills but did suggest that I start shaving the areas in question. Well sometimes when you are out in the field and you have to work on a dog that might not be a option but the good news is he checked out ok barring infection. Clue, We have also had broken tusks still impaled in dogs. One of the things we look for in cut up dogs if the hog has a broken tusk.

It is very easy for a vet to talk about u should do this or that. That’s a controlled setting with ketamine to put em under so that they don’t move while u fixin em. It ain’t that easy bogged up in a thicket or sawgrass. Glad to hear structurally he’s fine. Now the infection meds gotta do the rest.
