I was just sitting here in this warm house on my sorry behind, thinking. Yes I said I was thinking. That might be enough heat generated to melt the ice. Anyway, the thought process was this, I wonder how many dogs other people are feeding? By dogs I mean using dogs even the retired ones. I have 1 catch dog and 6 find dogs. One of the 6 (Raylynn) has a litter of pups on her at the moment. I have 3 that I can cast solo and find hogs. The other three are litter mates and only 2 have been hauled and hunted. One of those has found his own hogs since day one but has been on injured reserve after about every trip. The little gyp ran so hard the other day that she didn’t even want to get up and eat that night. She was at every hog that day and several times was hunting alone. She was in the right areas just got beat to the hogs by experience. We had to leash her up to make her quit to go home. So I’m pleased with both of them. The 3rd one might end up being my favorite. I’m fixing to put him in the woods since his brother is out and I think his sister had it in her mind pretty good about what we are there for. All are very kin and all play potential roles in my breeding program.

You are a rich man Cajun! That many hounds of that caliber, that’s like being married to 2 Dolly Partons at one time.

Between the BMC's, Plotts, and a couple Dogo's we'll have 20 something. That is too many to always do them justice, but if you only have what you can hunt or use and you have one bad day you can be out of business for awhile, and I don't like starting over.

The Old Man is right. I came close to being put out of business years ago. Ok T dog, I am going to send you my Therapist bill. Not rich by any means but I am dog poor. 2 bulldogs Yellow, Josh, Flirt, and Echo are started dogs 15-16 months. Finished dogs are Hank, Amber, Auburn, Showtime, Steel. Pups not started from 3-8 months are Judge, Hope, Blue, Bluebell, Brownie, Wonder and Captain. Retired dogs Brandy and Trumpet. I did sell a couple of finished dogs last month. I think the total is 20. I am starting a Go Fund me account for dogfood. All donations are appreciated.

Old man/Cajun...... I am in the position you guys described. One bad day or extra rank boar and I’m starting over. I need to get another bay dog going. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It’s sure not hard to get in a bad spot. I had a buddy that had 4 females of his family of dogs and in just about a month or two lost everyone of them to some sort of absolutely freak accidents. He pretty much had to start over. I don’t like to keep a ton of dogs and can’t afford a bunch if I take care of them the way I think they should be. For this reason I give my friends puppies and their friends if they are honorable dog people. Doing this allows me to watch the dogs in person and I have access to breed to them. These folks usually ask advice on who or what to breed to when it comes time or offer pups back if they have a litter. It didn’t work as well for me with my family of bulldogs. For my liking and expectations they were pretty dang nice. But most of them had long careers and people don’t usually keep as many catch dogs on hand so there were less outlets for puppies. Lots of people wanted them but I knew of too many dumb a$$ things they did with other bulldogs to give them one of mine. For these reasons I didn’t raise enough to continue on and have ran out. The right hunt can send you home with fewer dogs than you went to the woods with and it seems like those type of hunts come in spurts. We had about 4 or 5 in a row right before deer season. We lost one catch dog and saw some others (not mine) get a gut check because of the whoopin Mr. Hawg was dishing out. Lots of mending had to be done. So y’all are spot on about having too many one day and not enough the next.

Encinoman you are 3 dogs short. You need a squirrel dog, a bear dog, and a deer dog and you’ll pretty much have it all covered.

I’m feeding 10 and try to keep it around that number. It’s hard to do them all justice only hunting once, sometimes twice a week. I’ve hit a couple of real bad streaks and was left with nothing but young dogs to start over with a couple of times... it sucks. Need to hit the lottery where I can hunt all the time and raise several litters of pups a year hahahaha.

3 retired 1-10years 2-13 years 2 finished dogs 7 years old 1 bulldog 9 years old 1 started cur dog 2 years old. Straight Geriatric crew. I cross my fingers everytime I turn loose. After 7 straight breeding attempts in 3+ years, I got so desperate I had to buy and send a yellow dog from Texas to Fl. Now that is pure desperation! ![Smiley](http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) Some of yall sound like your in a good spot.

I think I'm good with what I got lol. Although I'd trade all my bird dogs for bear dogs if we had bears down here . Maybe some day, there has been bears spotted in both duval and brooks county this year and seems there are a couple every year around zapata and starr counties. I doubt there will be a huntable population of them though in my life time, if ever. But honestly besides hunting coons and cats with my kids, one of the reasons I have hound dogs is the dream of treeing a bear someday. May have to plan an out of state hunt sometime soon.
