For those of you that are not aware of it,,, Louisiana has bears in the woods...LOL.. I was not prepared for that idea since I hunt all over the state and have not run into a single problem yet with the furry pets.....that was until this past Sat morning in a new place me and my boy hunted.. We decided to just take two dogs saturday morning since we didnt know the lay out of the place and was just gonna see how much sign was on the place.. It didnt take long to find sign and we casted the dogs only to hear a nice bay or what we thought was a bay about 780 yards in. Well ,, the bay didnt last long and on the garmin it showed the dogs running right towards us on the road we were on.. Well,, here we are waiting to see the hog when this freakin bear comes busting out in front of us about 150 yards and crosses the road with a flame out of his tail... the older gyp I had brought that day hadnt been out since March and she was lined out on him about 60 yards behind on the track,, not even enuff time for me to catch her off of it. So my question to you fellers who have had to shock hog dogs off of bears,, who keep in mind are Plott hounds that are used on bears up north.. did that ever harm them in running a track on distinguishing between hogs or bears.. I lit her up with the shock collar and was able to end the race or bay or tree ,, whatever you want to call it,, I just knew I didnt want no part of figuring out what to do with him at the end of the chase... I dang sure wasnt gonna send the DOGO to him LOL...

Toby, I've walked up to many bear bays, grabbed my dog and walked off with bo issues.
No telling wethere the bear would have treed or not. I've treed bears with one dog and bayed them with 8 dogs.
Just depends on the bear.

It was a new experience for me even seeing one of em. Let alone having a dog running it. I gotta come up with a good plan though. Cause I’m sure there will be round two when I’m down there again. Thanks for the tips Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Toby, shocking that dog off a bear is like shocking a bird dog on point. It is what they are bred for. lol I bet that did kind of surprise you when that bear came across the road. Next time let the dogs run it. If they dont tree it in a couple of hours you will probably have one heck of a race. If they bay it on the ground just sneak in there and pull your dogs off. Most bear will break if they know you are there and if they dont, they are more concerned with the dogs then they are with you. If they tree it, go in and praise the dogs and leash them up. If it gets to be a problem, I can take those dogs off your hands.

Lol. I was waiting to hear from experience in this matter cause lord knows I didn’t have any. I will take y’all’s advice from now on down there and not be so trigger happy with the remote. The only good thing about this is I don’t have to drive up to Wisconsin to hear a bear race. Lol.

I'm sending the sheriff to your house today and he's charging you with cruel and unusual punishment of shocking a Plott off a bear haha. You needn't be concerned about treeing or baying a bear from a safety standpoint as uninjured black bear almost never attack a hunter with dogs on them. They will sometimes come down the tree when you walk in but it is to get away, not get you, as Cajun mentioned it is the same with a bayed bear. there are hilarious stories about guys getting ran over by a bear that is leaving a bay where more than one man was approaching from different angles. I would not send a catchdog to them, even though it "might" work part time it would cost you the catchdog pretty soon.

I don’t know if the sheriff would believe me but I didn’t want to run the bear worst than the bear wanted to be ran. Lol. The Dogo would do his part but I don’t think it would go easy me trying to legg him. Thanks for the tips fellers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
