Lost my best friend yesterday doing what we love to do.It was our second hunt since moving to GA last week we hunted a beautiful plantation and Hambone found a sounder way off we caught a couple out of it before we had to call em off because of the property line. Then yesterday we were invited to hunt a big farm as soon as we turned him into the wind he struck cut him loose and he went 800yds or so and located another sounder they tried to run on him but he got them stopped in a pine thicket you could hear him putting the brakes on them before he settled into a bay I  knew it was a bunch of hogs so I sent BJ,Cypress and Stanky to him we caught a little boar and they all left 3 different directions I knew that Hambone was doing what he did and stuck with the  dominant boar because he straightlined out past communications at 1.55miles BJ got his 2 stopped at 950yds and Cypress was .75 right off the highway so I said let's start closest to furthest we went to BJ and caught a fat sow and BJ left again while we were at BJ hog I got a quick bark detection on Hambone at another 1.5 from there so I figured he was settled in and he'd be fine I knew wasn't no hog gonna get him so we headed to Cypress a mile the opposite direction by the highway get there and had to ask that farmer we had a hog bayed and could we go catch it he said yes and if it was a sow he'd like to eat it.So we head to Cypress and she had a drove bayed up caught a  nice eating sow and caught her up took it back to the  farmer and he wanted to BS finally I said sorry but I have another dog bayed miles away.Head to Hambone it's now been a couple hrs but I really wasn't worried because he stays bayed that long regularly it was cold out and I wasn't worried about gators when we finally figured out how to get to him he was in a creek in the middle of a huge cuttover we pulled up to 350yds and cut off the buggy and I didn't hear any barking and immediately said this ain't good either his collar took a sh@t or something happened I asked my buddy to keep Rowdy while I went to him got there and found him drowned  he had a big boar bayed up under a overhang bank in a deep creek the ledge was on big enough for the  boar hog so he had been swimming baying for hrs and I think he got hypothermia the boars track was 3.5" wide and the seen was evident of what happened. Hambone didn't have a scratch on him the only hog to ever cut him was the very first hog he found solo he would catch a Rhino if I asked him though to he was a once in a lifetime dog he was so smart that he knew how to work hogs so easily he had the best winding ability on any dog I've ever seen to.I would watch him out smart boars all the time and and if there was a  boar there that's what he was gonna stick.I would watch him run one on the Garmin and them boars would hit a switchgrass pond full of hog tunnels and try and put him on sows and  shoalts and most dogs that works on Lol he'd haul but around the pond and actually make up ground and alot of time bay in the next head where the boar would exit I could go on and on about him and the times we had.He sure will be missed by me and Rowdy,Rowdy would feed him since he was in diapers and Hambone never once knocked him down in his chain circle he was extra gentle with Rowdy they would hug each other every day lol.Dangit I  miss him already! He was 4.5yrs old and in his prime,He looked good in any company and was usually the star of the show R.I.P., OL Buddy Until We meet again.....

Sooty about your loss…ole Hambone grew up with all of us following his hunts…it’s really hard when we lose a great hunting dog…another will step up…

Man, I’m really sorry to hear this one. I’ve enjoyed reading about Hambone for several years now, and he sounded like a sure enough super star. I hope one of his pups steps it up and fills his shoes for you.

Them are the kind you’ll spend years trying to replace and clone…they just don’t come around often enough!
