On the quest to be a dog man.

Went for a hunt this evening with a couple of buddies and ended up having an eventful night. Ranger bayed a rank boar hog right on the edge of a road through the property, my buddies old Roxie dog went to him and they caught out. We were about 200yds behind her, and as soon as I saw them I could see both of them eared up like bulldogs just getting thrashed. I can’t believe my young Ranger dog held on for that ride. I looked him over afterwards and saw some cuts and pokes but nothing that looked too serious.

His littermate Red was bayed 500yds from us, across a creek. By the time we killed the boar, Red had been bayed for about 45 minutes. Well while we were on the way to him Roxie bayed something big, only 100yds from us. Her, Ranger, and a catch dog that ended up getting culled tonight hit it and it immediately sounded violent. Broke after a second and the dogs ran it for 20 minutes or so until we started trying to call them in so we could go to Red. We got everything but Ranger and started back to red, not 2 minutes later Ranger was bayed. We knew it had to be the same boar unless he threw Ranger off on something. We finally got up there after 1.1 miles of walking, it ended up breaking when we got close and Ranger came on out to me. He had been bayed for about an hour before it broke. He came out and after I looked him over good I realized he had been cut up worse than I thought. I’m not sure if that second pig did the stuff I didn’t see at first or if I just missed it. After that we collected everything up and headed back to the truck. Didn’t ever catch anything else. I ended up taking him to a good friends house and he helped me doctor him up. He’ll be at the vet at 0600 this morning to get checked on, but I believe he will be alright.

Thanks fellas. Ranger is at the vet right now, they put him under anesthesia this morning to doctor him up a little better. I’ll spare the details for the forum, but when we got him off the second pig he was almost castrated. Enough that it made me cringe just thinking about it. Everything else was just skin and a little muscle and he should make a fine recovery. He’ll probably be healing up 4-5 weeks.

And I’ve caught a handful of these listed hogs, but not a bunch. We normally catch your standard black hogs. I’ve caught a few blonde ones that were cool looking as well. The only listed ones I’ve caught have been boars, blonde I have caught small boars or sows, and I’ve caught a couple of red ones as well. It’s been a while since I’ve caught a good boar, I wish we could’ve laid eyes on the second one. It was about 3 seconds of thrashing and he was off to the races. I couldn’t blame Ranger for coming on out to us after the last time it broke, lol. I’m surprised that he bayed him as long as he did in that condition. He was still trying to hunt on the way out. He was winding on the lead and wanted me to turn him loose

Muddy, I sure am trying! I’m pretty much running nothing but Ranger and his littermate Red. They’re around 16-17 months old. I have a female littermate I need to start messing with, and then I have a little RCD that I use sometimes but that’s about it. My older dogs have either been killed or are in rough shape now, so I’m trying work hard to keep these young ones in the woods and on pigs. I have some well bred pups that will be ready to start this time next year (I’m waiting until they’re around 12 months old) so my focus right now is on trying to get Red and Ranger to the point where I can use them to help show the ropes to the next set of pups. They’ve really been impressing me, especially for their age

Real good hunt and nice listed boar. That is a dominent trait. We had some russians brought in and when the mixed with the feral listed hogs they had some of the pretties colored russians but they had that white list one them. Nice hunt.

Nice hog sounds like Ranger and Red are making some nice dogs and it looks to me like your catching more hogs with them than you did with the others.Don't take this the wrong way but if I am not mistaken the litter you just bred has a heavy bulldog influence correct?I'd be REAL careful about running Ranger and Red with straight catch type dogs if it were me sounds like they might have a little sense to them and plenty of stick you might be looking past the best thing you've had.

Thanks fellas!

Cajun, do you know where the listed trait comes from?

Cracker, yessir my Bo Betty pups have bull dog in them, I’ve bred them away from that side and back towards the BMC side in hopes that I’ll take a little bit of the catch out. I used to love straight catch dogs but I’ve grown fond to having a dog that will back up and bay as long as the hog will stand there, but catch with others or with the bull dog. I have two pups that lived from that litter. I also went down to Louisiana on New Years and got two female pups from Mr. Larry Parker. I’m very excited about raising and starting those two. IF those pups all make the cut, I am looking at potentially crossing my male Bo Betty pup to both of those Parker females and then taking those litters together. Essentially just using the dogs I have been working for as the outcross to the parkers. I have loved the Bo Betty dogs but at the end of the day I won’t let kennel blindness or my own personal feelings to get in the way of producing better dogs. I have heard great things about Mr. Parker’s dogs, and I’ve heard that they tend to do well crossed over other lines. I’m hoping that if I do make that cross, my male will be tight enough bred that the variables I’m introducing to the parkers won’t be nearly as much as a dog that isn’t bred tight. Time will tell though, right now all I can do is hunt the young ones and give them the opportunity to make dogs, and then take it from there. My end goal though, is producing my own dogs that do things the way I like, and reproduce themselves consistently. I may get there one day, but time will tell.

Ranger has been one of the best dogs I’ve owned. Even at his age he has been hunting better and striking more pigs than a lot of the older dogs I’ve hunted with. Red isn’t as good of a dog so far, but he is also looking good for his age. If I could duplicate Ranger I would in a heartbeat, but unfortunately he’s so scatter bred that I doubt if I could ever reproduce him. His father is 3/4 BMC and 1/4 bird dog (it was a half bird dog outcross over a BMC line that produced him). His mother is 1/2 walker and 1/2 pit. I don’t know anything else about her background, I got her from a good buddy of mine as an older dog for training pups. I was out of a lead dog and he worked a deal for me to get her. She came in heat and I decided to breed her just to see what she would produce because I liked her and the male was young but was hunting good. So far it looks like about half the litter has been earning their feed. There were two culled but I never personally saw them, I was told they wouldn’t show interest in a pig. There are a few others that I can’t remember where they went so idk how they have been doing. My buddy has a littermate male that is coming on really nice as well.

Oh and I didn’t take that the wrong way at all! I think you have some fine dogs and it looks like you have a good program going on your yard. At the end of the day I’m probably one of the youngest guys on this forum and I do appreciate any advice, tips, and wisdom that you guys have to offer. I’ve become 10fold better and hunting and handling dogs since I first joined this forum, I reckon around 6-7 years ago. I try to continually learn and improve myself as well as my dogs, and guys like you have a whole lot of knowledge to offer!

Austesus you’ll keep getting better with an attitude like that! A lot of knowledge gets held back and lost because too many people get butt hurt over constructive criticism. A lot of experienced hunters don’t want to risk getting in  pi$$ing match or be disrespected because someone had their feelings on their sleeve and all they were trying to do was help. Anyway, cudos to you for being man enough to hear advise the way it was meant.

Thank you Thomas, I’ve enjoyed our talks as well! I have seen quite a few people lose friends or having falling out over hog hunting, and I just don’t get it. Guys always have a pissing match about who has better dogs… I won’t try to down someone’s dogs, shoot I hope they’re better than mine because then I can see what a better dog look like, re-evaluate my dogs, hopefully they’ll pick up a trick or two from the better dogs, and maybe I’ll end up with a new hunting buddy. I know a lot of people that hate old so an so, for whatever reason. Half the time the hate them over something that they’ve heard about them and they’ve never actually met them. I know that’s steering off the topic of this, but nonetheless it’s a shame. I don’t have the attitude to deal with drama all the time, lol. I like to get along with everybody and just have fun. At this point I’m not eating pig for my survival, I’m just out here trying to improve my dogs, improve myself, and have a good time out in gods country.

Yes, It comes from Hampshire hogs from when people used to free range there livestock. A feral hog can be any color that were domesticated hogs were.

Cajun, thanks for the info. I’m dumb when it comes to domestic pigs. I recognize the names of some of them but really don’t know much about them.
