WE HERE AT EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS DO NOT CLAIM TO BE EXPERT HOG HUNTERS. THIS IS SIMPLY MEANT TO BE A HELPFUL GUIDE FOR THOSE JUST GETTING STARTED. THE BEST ADVICE ANYONE CAN GIVE A BEGINNER IS TO HUNT WITH EXPERIENCED, ETHICAL HUNTERS WHO WILL SHOW THEM THE RIGHT WAY TO DO THINGS.

CARDINAL RULES
1.)    LISTEN TO THOSE WITH YOU WHO HAVE MORE EXPERIENCE.
2.)    PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT IS GOING ON AT ALL TIMES. A HUNT IS NO PLACE FOR DAYDREAMING, AND COULD LEAD TO BIG PROBLEMS.
3.)    THINGS CAN HAPPEN VERY FAST, BE READY TO HELP IF NEEDED.
4.)    RESPECT THE LAND AND TREAT IT LIKE IT WERE YOUR OWN
5.)    NEVER HANDLE OR DISCIPLINE ANOTHER HUNTERS DOG UNLESS YOU KNOW IT IS OKAY BY THEM.
6.)    ALWAYS CLEAR ANY DOGS YOU BRING WITH THE PERSON WHO INVITES YOU ON THE HUNT.
7.)    DO NOT SHOW UP TO HUNT WITH ANY UNINVITED GUESTS OR DOGS.

HELPFUL ITEMS TO HAVE ON HAND
THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LIST BY ANY MEANS. NOR ARE ALL THESE THINGS ALWAYS NECESSARY. HUNTING IS SITUATIONAL, AND DIFFERENT THINGS ARE REQUIRED AT DIFFERENT TIMES.
1.)    A GOOD KNIFE
2.)    TIES OR HOBBLES (AGAIN, DEPENDS ON THE SITUATION)
3.)    CAMERA- HUNTING STORIES ARE ALWAYS BETTER WITH PICTURES!
4.)    GOOD DURABLE BOOTS- WHAT KIND DEPENDS ON THE SEASON, TERRAIN, PREFERENCE, ETC…
5.)    CELLPHONE- NOT REQUIRED, CAN COME IN HANDY THOUGH
6.)    EXTRA DOG LEADS
7.)    WATER- IMPORTANT FOR DOGS AND PEOPLE
8.)    GOOD LEATHER GLOVES

HELPFUL ITEMS TO HAVE AT YOUR VEHICLE
ALSO NOT A COMPLETE LIST. IT JUST DEPENDS ON YOUR NEEDS AND PREFERENCES.
1.)    CHANGE OF CLOTHES (TRUST ME ON THIS ONE)
2.)    CUT KIT FOR YOUR DOGS (THEY ARE WORKING FOR YOU, DON’T LET THEM DOWN WHEN THEY NEED YOUR HELP)
3.)    EXTRA WATER
4.)    MESQUITO SPRAY- FOR THOSE HOTTER  MONTHS HERE IN TEXAS

DOG CUT KIT ITEMS
THIS ALSO FALLS UNDER THE “WHAT YOU PREFER TO CARRY” CATEGORY. EXPERIENCE WILL TEND TO DICTATE WHAT YOU THINK IS NECESSARY TO HAVE ON HAND. NEVER USE THESE ITEMS UNLESS YOU ARE FIRST FAMILIAR WITH THE PROPER WAY TO USE THEM!
1.)    STAPLE GUN W/ EXTRA STAPLES
2.)    SUTURE KIT
3.)    BETADINE
4.)    CLEAN RAGS
5.)    BANDAGES
6.)    SALINE SOLUTION
7.)    BLOODSTOP POWDER
8.)    PEDIALITE---FOR OVER-HEATED DOGS

TERMS USED IN THE FIELD
THIS IS JUST A LITTLE SECTION I ADDED FOR FUN. WHEN I FIRST STARTED HUNTING, I NOTICED HUNTERS USING TERMS I WASN’T FAMILIAR WITH (TYPICAL CITY BOY). HOG HUNTERS SEEM TO HAVE A LANGUAGE ALL THEIR OWN. SO HERE ARE SOME OF THOSE SO YOU DON’T GET LOST IN THE CONVERSATION.
1.)    SHOAT- A SMALL HOG
2.)    BAY- TYPICALLY WHEN DOGS BARK AT A HOG TO KEEP IT FROM RUNNING
3.)    STRIKE DOG- A DOG THAT SEARCHES OUT AND FINDS THE HOG
4.)    CATCH DOG- A DOG THAT GRABS ONTO THE HOG AND HOLDS IT
5.)    GYP- A FEMALE DOG
6.)    STICKING- TO STAB A HOG
7.)    MULE TAPE- HIGH STRENGTH FLAT ROPE USED TO TIE A HOG
8.)    HOBBLES- STRAPS WITH RINGS USED TO TIE A HOG
9.)    BOOGER BARK- BARKING A DOG WILL SOMETIMES DO WHEN IT IS LOST
10.) CUTTERS- A HOG’S LOWER PROTRUDING TEETH
11.) WHETTERS- A HOG’S UPPER PROTRUDING TEETH
12.)  BARR HOG- A CASTRATED MALE HOG
13.)  BAYED SOLID- THE DOGS HAVE THE HOG STOPPED AND SURROUNDED (YOU MAY ALSO HEAR THIS CALLED “HEMMED UP”)
14.) WALLOW- A  MUD HOLE  A  HOG WILL ROLL AROUND IN TO STAY  COOL
15.) RUB- A POLE OR TREE A HOG HAS RUBBED AGAINST, SOMETIMES LEAVING MUD THERE.
16.)  TRASHING- WHEN A DOG IS RUNNING OR BARKING AT SOMETHING ELSE BESIDES A HOG
17.) SOUNDER- A LARGE GROUP OF HOGS
18.) RALLY- WHEN A GROUP OF HOGS TAKE AN OFFENSIVE POSTURE PREPARING TO BREAK A BAY
